While summertime gives us license to be a bit lazier—er, more carefree—we don’t want to look like complete bums. We asked three makeup artists how to pump up our look without an extended session in front of the mirror. The answer? Emphasize one feature, and emphasize it right.
A simple smoky eye
Smoky eye makeup is typically associated with nighttime, but working with brighter colors can make it daytime appropriate. Starting on the lids, sweep a deep teal shadow like Mark’s I-Mark Eye Shadow in Retro Peacock, up to the crease. “Smudge the color along the top and bottom lash line with an eyeliner brush—it helps intensify the eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist Mai Qyinh.
Perfectly flushed cheeks
“Bright, bronze-y skin is gorgeous and won’t make you look overdone,” says Tim Quinn, Giorgio Armani Beauty makeup artist. Create a flawless canvas with foundation then follow with a bright blush on the apples of cheeks for a pop of color. A good one to try: Armani Blushing Fabric in 4, which has a creamy, sinks-right-in texture. Top with a light dusting of bronzer to create contrast, says Quinn.
For a twist on classic red lipstick, bright pink and berry shades are a welcome summer trend. “A bold lip is a go-to look that always makes a statement, regardless of whether you’re wearing jeans and a tank or a summer cocktail dress,” says L’Oreal Paris makeup artist Collier Strong. For ultimate staying power, outline your lips with a liner in the same shade as your lipstick. “Smile a little so the lips are tight and the liner glides along smoothly,” says Strong. Finish with a punchy berry lipstick like L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Forever Fuchsia.
