Copper usually takes a backseat to gold in the commodities market—and in makeup. While gold tends to be a universally flattering color, copper—with its orange-y undertones—takes a little more finesse to pull off. So when the folks over at Bella Sugar posted this photo of Blake Lively sporting a coppery makeup look at last night's Spike TV Scream Awards in L.A., I figured it was a good time to post a few tips on how to wear this hue. 1. Focus on one feature. Copper adds a warm, sexy glow to eyes or lips—but on both, the look verges on flashy. So choose one feature to play up with the color, then balance it out with a shimmer-free neutral shade on the other (either a soft brown matte shadow on your lids, or a nude lip gloss). 2. On eyes, keep it light. If you're fair, go with a pale copper shadow such as The Body Shop Eye Shimmer in Copper. If you have olive or dark skin, you can wear a brighter penny-colored shade, such as the one in Maybelline New York Eye Studio Eye Shadow Quad in Copper Chic. Sweep the shadow from your lash line to just above your crease, and do a faint sweep of it under your bottom lashes for a soft smoky effect. This look works best when it's understated, so skip eyeliner and go easy on mascara. If you must add liner, pick a chocolate brown shade, such as L'Oréal Paris Le Kohl Pencil in Café, rather than black. 3. On lips, go deep. I'll be frank—bright copper lipstick doesn't look good on anyone (sorry, Blake). A dark coppery gloss, on the other hand, can be beautiful. Look for one that's more russet than orange (the latter can make your teeth look yellow) and stick with sheer formulas that have a hint of sheen as opposed to full-on sparkle. Lancôme L'Absolu Crème de Brillance in Cherrywood Luxe is a good choice. 4. Choose the right blush. Don't wear peach blush with coppery makeup—it emphasizes the shade's orange undertones and can make your skin look sickly. Instead, pick a beige color such as Giorgio Armani Beauty Sheer Blush in Sand if you have fair skin, or a bronzy hue like Yves Saint Laurent Terre Saharienne Bronzing Powder No. 3 Golden Sand if you have olive or dark skin.
