A lot of beauty bloggers started their sites as a tribute to their favorite products. But for Patrice Elizabeth Grell-Yursik, it was her dislike of chemical hair straightening that inspired her to spread her beauty gospel. Born and raised in Trinidad, Patrice stopped straightening her naturally curly hair after she moved to the U.S.—and soon realized there was an absence of information in the blogosphere for African-American women who wear their hair natural.
In 2006, she founded Afrobella as a place to share news not only about natural hair, but about products for "all shades of beautiful." Now this former Miami newspaper editor with a masters in creative writing peppers her site with product reviews, giveaways, interviews with influential figures, and musings on fashion and culture (she even has a column dedicated to music). She also has her own radio show and was recently commissioned by Italian Vogue to write about beauty for a section of their website called Vogue Black.
Seems sometimes it's better not to play things straight. View the blog»
