When it comes to summer, there’s one thing at the top of everyone’s mind: getting away. Naturally, you need to pack the perfect beauty travel kit, stocked with essentials for your hair, skin, makeup and nails to look good on the road, in the air, or just about anywhere across the globe. We asked some of the top names in beauty to share their favorite beauty products to pack, along with how to get the most out of what you bring in your carry-on bag and beyond.
Beauty Travel Kit Rules To Live By
Preparing everything you need for your next trip can seem overwhelming…until now. Check out our guide to packing, prepping and prettifying!
Rule 1: Know Before You Go
Before you even reach for your Dopp kit, think about what you’re going to need for both your method of transit as well as the climate (and locale) in which you’ll be staying. If you’re flying, make sure to bring a hydrating face mask or cream for an in-flight boost, but ensure that everything in your carry-on is under 3 fluid ounces—otherwise, you’ll be repackaging your bags in the middle of the security aisle. (Maybe we’ve been there before.)
Likewise, think about your destination. If you’re headed somewhere desert-like, consider packing products rich in humectants and moisturizing ingredients. If you’re visiting somewhere far more tropical, think about packing a bit of anti-frizz product spiked with smoothing ingredients or volumizing mousse for hair that falls flat, depending on if your hair is naturally curly or straight.
Rule 2: Go Double (or Triple) Duty
Whether you’re limited by the three-ounce rule or not, know that whatever you’re packing with you is taking up precious shoe (accessory, clothes, whatever) space, so make sure your beauty travel kit is stocked with products that can give you a mile out of every inch. For example, use a lipstick that works also as a blush, a multi-purpose primer and liner, like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Liner in Ozone, a hair and body oil to hydrate from head-to-toe, a bronzer you can use as shadow, or a foundation that can also conceal, such as Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Longwear Foundation Stick. Same applies for hair stuff, too: A cleansing conditioner, such as Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Medium Hair, can also work as shaving cream and body wash in a pinch.
When it comes to going global, no one knows how to pack better than the top makeup artists, many of whom jet set around near constantly, working with a slew of celebrity clientele. We tapped a few of our favorites to find out what they’d tell you to pack in your travel bag this summer.
Timothy Quinn, Celebrity Makeup Artist for Giorgio Armani Beauty
“This lightweight, waterproof long-wear primer not only protects skin, but perfects it too.” We like to sometimes put it on after our skincare and skip makeup altogether, it’s protection that perfects the skin
Not only is this low-key foundation one of the brand’s best-selling and most beloved products, it’s also got some super-cool technology, too. “I love the idea that it combines advanced multi-performing skincare with blurring pigments that give the skin a gorgeous, no-makeup look with a subtle glow,” says Quinn.
If you pack one lip color for any trip this summer, Quinn says freshly squeezed is best. Freshly squeezed orange, that is. His preference is this liquid lipstick, “a gorgeous, semi-matte orange-red tone that subtly compliments any summer look and works with every complexion.”
“My personal serum is a blend of our Wrinkle Reducing and Brightening complexes, but you’ll have to visit a Kiehl’s store before your trip to create a personalized serum that’s best for your own concerns. Apothecary Preparations serums are our very best formulas. They’re our most efficacious, and they’re the freshest, because customers combine the formula themselves when they’re ready to use it. Each serum is so personal—they target the customer’s two biggest concerns, which are determined after a detailed, personalized consultation.”
“Even when you’re not traveling on a sunny vacation, you need to wear SPF protection every day. If you’re outside, for any length of time, you should be protecting your skin, and this formula has an incredibly light, matte finish that’s perfect for everyday use.”
“Traveling is no time to slack on your evening skincare, especially when new environments can challenge your skin. Different temperatures, different air quality; even different water can all deplete your skin. A few drops of Midnight Recovery Concentrate after washing your face at night restores and replenishes your skin by morning.”
The ultimate, award-winning highlighter, concealer and overall skin perfector “is the ultimate travel accessory. It is very portable and great to freshen up your makeup any time of the day. You instantly look awake and refreshed.”
“It has eyeshadows, lipstick and eyeliner all in one Palette. It also has a dual sided brush that fits in the palette so it’s everything you need when you’re on the go,” says Ashley. Did we also happen mention how gorgeous it is just to look at?
Another double-duty miracle worker, Dell loves this cream. “It gives you instant hydration, firms, lifts and adds luminosity,” he says. “You can sleep in it so it doubles as your evening moisturizer, too.”
“When you are traveling and not resting as much, this will take away the look of dark circles and make you look as if you’ve had eight hours of sleep,” says Ashley. And even if you did get eight hours, this cream is nothing short of a miracle worker that’ll leave you looking instantly more radiant.
“Whenever you’re on an airplane – you either get super dehydrated skin or you get super oily (I fall into the oily category). Because of this, I am a huge proponent of traveling with good skincare in your carryon. I love this one; it has mattifying properties, so before and after the flight I lather it on. The Hyaluronic Acid helps improve your skin’s fullness and is a great makeup prep as well and the aloe water is super hydrating. It is one of my faves.”
“I love to travel with this” skin-care brush, Sir John says, because “skincare is huge for me.” And nothing’s better than keeping airplane germs, city pollution, and dirty air at bay than this cleansing brush, which will get even the toughest grime out of your pores, gently exfoliate and leave you with fresh, baby-soft skin.
Sir John echoes our sentiment of double-duty beauty, telling us to “opt for products that are convertible pieces and can be used for multiple things.” For example, he loves to use this lip lacquer as a blush. “After you apply the matte gloss on your lips, you can just tap onto your cheeks, just as you would a cream blush,” he says.
Consider this your desert-island pick, as this mascara gives you the most impossibly fluttery lashes without flakes, clumps, or breakage. And since it’s laced with nylon fibers, it gives your fringe several millimeters of extra length, too.
