Behind every gorgeous supermodel is her amazing style squad, which is usually made up of some of the best makeup and hair pros in the biz. Yes, she was definitely born with it (“it” being superior genes, of course), but these experts know how to take it to next level glam, creating memorable looks that go on to be major trends.

So, if you want to know a model’s beauty secrets, it makes sense to go straight to the source—her hair and makeup team. Well, that’s exactly what we did here. We chatted with the beauty gurus to some of beauty’s top models and major influencers—big names like Taylor Hill, Hailey Baldwin, and Gigi Hadid—and snagged the cool tricks and must-have products they use on their clients on the regular. Get the insider scoop below.

Sir John Barnett, Celebrity Makeup Artist for L'Oreal Paris

The Model: Karlie Kloss

The Expert: Sir John Barnett, celebrity makeup artist for L’Oréal Paris

Makeup.com: How do you prep Karlie for shoots?

Sir John: I always start with skincare first—it’s one of the most important steps. I prep her skin withL’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Moisturizer. It’s super-hydrating and a good base under makeup. When applying the moisturizer, I like to give a face massage, going counter clockwise to speed up blood flow.

MDC: What’s your makeup trick for flawless skin?

SJ: Karlie has amazing skin, so I like to create second skin and airbrushed effects when doing her makeup. My kit is stocked with the Infallible Blend Expert Sponges. They are like my magic erasers and blenders. I use them for foundation, contour, highlight—everything.

MDC: Is there one look you love to do on her?

SJ: I love to do taupe matte eyeshadow and winged liner. The taupe and nude colors essentially contour and carve out her eyes, making them deeper. The winged liner then gives the eyes a lifted look. I also love giving [Karlie] a bold lip. It just adds punctuation against the nude eye and airbrushed skin. I’ve used Colour Riche Matte Lipstick in Devils Matte-Vocate Red.

[box] Tip: To create the eye look mentioned above, Sir John loves Colour Riche Monos Shadow in Matte It Up! He applies it on the top lid to sculpt the eye. He then lines the upper lash line with Infallible Black Velvet Liner, leaving underneath the eye clean.

MDC: What are your favorite L'Oréal Paris products to use on Karlie?

SJ: Infallible Pro-Glow Concealer. It gives great coverage—and you can strobe and contour with it. And Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner. It’s waterproof, so it stays put. It’s great for on set. Karlie also loves a sculpted look and loves to make her cheekbones and jawline pop with Infallible Pro-Contour Kit. She also loves a good highlight. I use True Match Lumi Liquid Illuminatoron her cheeks, collarbone, etc.

Hailey Baldwin at The Met Gala 2017

The Model: Hailey Baldwin

The Expert: Florido Basallo, celebrity hairstylist

MDC: How do you prep Hailey's hair for shoots?

FB: I start prepping her hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Liss Unlimited Smoothing Cream on damp hair. Then I smooth it out with a blow dryer. When fully dry, I’ll put in Tecni.Art Volume Envy Extra Mousse.

MDC: What’s a quick trick you often use on Hailey?

FB: Setting her hair in velcro rollers is a great way to start any style that is going to need volume.

MDC: Is there one look you love to do on her?

FB: There are so many looks I love to do on Hailey: a high pony, textured waves, or a tight bun like we did for the Met Gala (see above image). Romance was the inspiration for Hailey’s look. I wanted to add some contrast, so I made sure the top knot was messy and edgy.

Want to get the look? Here’s Basillo’s step-by-step from the Met Gala:

Step 1: On damp hair, work a dollop of L’Oréal Professionnel Sleek and Swing Gel through hair and blow dry straight.

Step 2: Spritz medium-sized sections of hair with L'Oréal Professionnel Infinium 4 Hairspray, comb through, and hit with a single pass of flatiron.

Step 3: Brush hair into a high ponytail. Then apply L’Oréal Professionnel OR Graphic Modelling Gel to the sides and back of pony for a sleek look.

Step 4: Loop and tuck the ponytail into a knot. Pin with bobby pins to secure.

Step 5: Spray with L’Oréal Professionnel Extreme Lacquer Hairspray.

MDC: What are your must-have L'Oreal Professionnel products for Hailey?

There are so many great L’Oréal Professionnel products. Some of my favorites are Infinium 4 Hair Spray because it’s so workable, and the Tecni.Art Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo. It’s a lifesaver when you need to freshen up the hair quickly.

Gigi Hadid, model

The Model: Gigi Hadid

The Expert: Grace Lee, lead makeup artist for Maybelline New York

MDC: How do you prep Gigi for shoots?

GL: We first start off with a conversation about what she wants the look to be. She's so versatile and open that it makes it so easy for any makeup artist to work with her. I like to start by prepping her skin and giving her a mini facial and massage. It always makes her makeup look better and creates a glow from within.

MDC: What are some of your favorite beauty tricks to use on her?

GL: When you are in a hurry, do the eyes first so you don't have to worry about shadow fallout—and you can rest your hand on the face freely. Then do your concealer and foundation. Another trick: Use single lashes opposed to a full strip. It looks way more natural, but still gives a beautiful flare.

MDC: Is there one look you love to do on her?

GL: She looks good in anything! A favorite look: Ombré red lips and the double wing black and white tuxedo liner.

MDC: What are your favorite Maybelline products to use on Gigi?

GL: Mascara, of course! Lash Sensational is my favorite, Master Strobing Stick Illuminating HighlighterBaby Lips. Gigi loves a good nude lipstick as well such as Color Sensational The Buffs Lipstick in Truffle Tease. There are so many good nudes from Maybelline New York. The Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick is amazing for red carpet as it lasts so long.

Taylor Hill’s Makeup Artist Shares Her Big Eye Secrets

Taylor Hill, top model and Lancôme’s latest ambassadress, is the face of the brand’s new mascara launch, Monsieur Big Mascara, a mega volumizing formula that plumps lashes for up to 24 hours. Hill wore it to the Met Gala (see below image) earlier this spring. Here, celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta breaks down the sultry, smoky eye she rocked at that event.

Step 1: The goal was a smoky burgundy eye to complement her burgundy dress. Ta used Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick in 397 Berry Noir to prime the lids.

Step 2: He then used Lancôme Petit Trésor Eyeshadow in Hotel Particulier in the crease.
“This color has a luminous finish so in person your eyelids can look almost wet,” he says.

Step 3: Then apply the Lancôme Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Rose Tempete using the second to darkest shade onto the eyelids to really open the eyes, he says. Use the darkest shade in the palette on the outer crease area and lash lines.

Step 4: Ta used Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense on the inner water line, and Bronze Riche on the outer water line, smudging it to create a smoky look.

Step 5: Curl your lashes and apply two coats of Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara.

What about the rest of your face? To keep the focus on the eyes, Ta kept the rest of Hill’s look simple: fresh and glow-y skin, using Lancôme Click & Glow Liquid Highlighter in shade Lumières D’or Rose under the eyes, and Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in the colors Petal Pushing and Rose Flush on the apples of her cheeks. “We wanted to find a blush color that would help the makeup look extra bronze, but still pretty and pink to tie into the eyes,” says Ta. Lips were the perfect pinky-nude: a mix of Lancôme Matte Shaker in 272 Energy Peach and 270 Beige Vintage.
