In the skincare world, oily skin is often deemed a negative thing. People with excessive oil are pigeon-holed as having “problematic” or “troubled” skin. While we totally understand that oily skin can result in some not-so-fun issues, like acne, we also discovered it comes with quite the silver lining … three, in fact. So, the next time your shiny forehead makes you want to scream, remember these three fun facts. You’re welcome.
In a 2012 article by Dr. Alexander J. Michels of Oregon State University’s Linus Pauling Institute, vitamin E levels in the skin are higher in those with overactive sebaceous glands (aka oily skin). What’s the big hoopla, you ask? Well, vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that can protect your skin from free-radical damage and premature wrinkles. So basically that oil could be your own personal fountain of youth … literally. Cue your happy dance.
Oil is a natural moisturizer, and skin with an overactive supply is easier to keep supple and soft. Yes, you may have to deal with other issues like clogged pores and acne, but parched, patchy skin is typically not the problem. However, don’t think you can skip out on the moisturizer just because you’ve got a natural one on tap. No, oily skin still needs other forms of moisture, especially if you’re using any type of acne-fighting products or formulas that can dry out your complexion. Apply an oil-free moisturizer like Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion to help maintain that natural softness.
While some may have their highlighting and illuminating products on standby at all times, you use it sporadically because, well, you can. The natural, overly enthusiastic oils in your skin work as a highlighter, making your skin look dewy all the time. Oil also helps hide those fine lines and wrinkles, as opposed to excessive dryness, which can accentuate them and make your skin look crepey. Alright, alright, so sometimes your face can get downright greasy, which is why you never leave home without your oil-blotting sheets. But, other than that, you’re good to glow!
