How well do you take care of your skin? Are you a skincare junkie, or do you wash your face with body wash? Does the word ceramides give you flashbacks to your high school chem class? If so, you’re not alone. According to CeraVe, up to 80% of Americans are washing their faces incorrectly. The study surveyed 1,000 men and women across the US, and the results just might surprise you. Over half of participants surveyed reported that they use bath wash or hand soap to clean their face, and more than a third only use water. Are you surprised? Dr. Dendy Engelman, a leading New York City dermatologist is not. According to her, the solution is continued education, learning your skin type and paying attention to the ingredients you’re using on your skin.
If this leaves you wondering what kind of cleansers you should be using, Engelman has a few suggestions. “It is especially critical for those with sensitive or dry skin or those diagnosed with eczema, all of whom should steer away from cleansers containing high levels of benzoyl peroxide as this can dry and irritate skin,” she says. Instead, she recommends a gentle, creamy cleanser for just about everyone. If you’re looking for something more brand-specific, she suggests starting with CeraVe, a drugstore brand developed with dermatologists.
