This Duo-Chrome Eye Makeup Tutorial Is a Lifesaver

The duo-chrome eye is one of our favorite makeup trends because it allows us to play with contrasting shades in one look. Want to line your upper lash line with a bold red and your lower with a blue? Go for it. Yellow and purple? Pink and green? All good. The color pairings are endless. Still not sure it’s the right look for you? We created our own version with the help of NYC based MUA Anne Kohlhagen. Here’s how to get the look, ahead.

STEP 1: Start With Your Upper Color
After you’ve prepped your eye, you want to begin your two-toned finish on the upper lash line. As far as colors are concerned, Kohlhagen says it all depends on what kind of look you’re going for. “For a softer look, you can use similar colors together,” she says, “but if you’re looking to get a bolder look, try using contrasting colors so that each color pops on its own.” Here, Kohlhagen used the NYX Professional Makeup SFX Creme Colour in Orange on the upper lash line. “Be sure to smudge along the upper lash line with a flat shader brush,” she notes, in order to blur out the lines of the bold shape, so it appears soft.

STEP 2: Go In With Your Second Color
Next, smudge your second color onto the lower lash line. Kohlhagen used the Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil in Mainline here. The reason why we love this type of pencil for this look is because it’s easy to smudge and manipulate with a dome-shaped brush, which will help you achieve a less-harsh effect. Wing this out and connect it under the upper color for a totally striking finish.  

STEP 3: Set Your Eye
To complete the look, set your eye makeup with a setting spray like the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray to ensure that your colors do not blend or crease throughout the day or evening. Kohlhagen also recommends bringing your colors and brushes along with you so you can touch up if need be.
