The Classic Makeup Looks We Just Can't Quit

As much as we love to talk about (and try) the latest and greatest makeup trends, we’ll never forget about those classic, tried-and-true looks that we’ve been emulating since Mom let us wear makeup. There’s something to be said about looks that have dominated the beauty world for decades and even centuries (yes, centuries). To pay homage to these classics, we decided to roundup our favorites, plus give you the Maybelline New York products that will help you create the look! Let us know which one is your go-to. And don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with picking all five!

Matte Makeup

The way we see it, any opportunity to make our skin look and feel virtually pore-free and flawless is a no-brainer. Here’s how to shine without, well, shining.

Step 1. Using a flat foundation brush or sponge, apply a mattifying foundation like Matte & Poreless Fit Me Foundationall over the face. Blend it out to the neck area as well so you have even color on both regions.

Step 2. Using a foundation that’s two shades darker than your skin tone, contour your cheekbones, sides of your nose and along the temples and hairline. Make sure to buff out the darker shade well to ensure the color is subtle. Then, apply a setting powder like Fit Me Loose finishing Powder to your face and underneath the eyes to lock in your makeup.

Step 3. Apply a soft, cream-colored eye shadow like the one in The City Mini Palette in Chill Brunch Neutrals to the lids. Using an angled brush, apply the same shadow along the lower lash line.

Step 4. Create a strong, matte brow by filling in any bare areas of your brows and accentuating their shape with Brow Drama Shaping Chalk Powder.

Fresh faced

There’s an art to creating that highly coveted fresh, “no-makeup”, flawless face—and it requires makeup. Here’s how to get it.

Step 1. Conceal flaws and counteract dullness and redness with a long-lasting concealer like Master Camo Color Correcting Pen. Its small applicator deposits just the right amount of makeup, which is key because you want to look like your skin is bare, yet perfect. Hide blemishes by dabbing lightly and blending concealer into skin with your pinky for the lightest touch. Dark circles are best hidden by swiping on concealer and blending. Top with a bit of foundation if necessary. Try Matte & Poreless Fit Me Foundation.

Step 2. Apply loose powder only to the areas where you get shiny (likely the t-zone). Try Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder.

Step 3. Choose a warm peach or pink blush to give a subtle flush—the kind you’d get if you were, in fact, blushing. Try Fit Me Blush in Peach.

Step 4. Apply a soft, brownish eye shadow to the natural shape of your eye. Choose a shade slightly darker than your skin, and brush it into the creases and along the lower lashes. Add a touch of shimmery beige to the centers of the lids, the brow bones, and the inner corners of the eyes. Try City Palette in Downtown Sunrise, which has all of the colors you’ll need to create this look.

Step 5. Choose a lip color that’s a shade or two darker than your natural lip color (you want to define and darken lips, not alter them). Try Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Dreamer, a soft nude rose.

Step 6. Apply two coats of black mascara to the top lashes only to create definition without looking overly dramatic. Skipping bottom lashes also helps open up the eye. Try Lash Sensational Curvitude Washable Mascara.

Smoky eye

From Cleopatra to Cara Delevingne, the smoky’s long been a part of the makeup canon. Check out this modern take on the classic—we’re calling it The Sooty Eye.

Step 1. Apply concealer to eyelids to even out color and serve as a primer so that this look doesn’t slide around (lest you look like a raccoon instead of a sultry goddess). Try Master Camo Color Correcting Pen to get rid of any dullness or darkness around the eyes.

Step 2. Apply a soft black or slate-hued eye shadow to your lids, using a fluffy brush to diffuse and extend the shadow beyond the crease. Try The City Mini Palette in Concrete Runway.

Step 3. Line the entire perimeter of your eye with a metallic black eyeliner. Try Master Precise Ink Metallic Liquid Liner. Smudge slightly with a shadow brush so that there are no hard lines.

Step 4. Go heavy on the mascara. Apply 2-3 coats of smudge-proof black mascara like Lash Sensational Curvitude Waterproof Mascarato top and bottom lashes.

Cat’s eye

There’s a reason that Cat Woman is one of the sexiest superheroes ever—anything channeling the smooth moves of a feline reads seductive. And the cat’s eye is certainly no exception. Here’s how to create one like a pro.

Step 1. Take your business card or a piece of tape and align the edge with the bottom corner of your upper lash line up to the outer edge of your brow. Card placement is key: Make sure you’re holding the card at an angle so the wing is going almost directly upward (at least 45 degrees) and not facing down or angled too horizontally.

Step 2. Using a dark, smooth eyeliner, draw a line along the edge of the card. The line should start as a continuation of your last lash, going up and out.  Try Master Precise Ink Metallic Liquid Liner.

Step 3. Go back and line the rest of your top lash line to your inner corner, staying as close to the lash line as possible. Do the same for your bottom lash line. Then make sure you fill in the area between the top line and bottom line at the outer corners with liner.

Step 4. Curl lashes and apply black mascara to top lashes only, concentrating more on those at the outer corner. Add an extra coat to the last few lashes for extra oomph. Try Lash Sensational Curvitude Washable Mascara.

Step 5. Since your eyes will be the statement piece of your face, make sure your brows are perfection by filling in and accentuating with a matte powder. Try Brow Drama Shaping Chalk Powder.

Red Lip

Nothing says classic like a lush red lip. It can transform a simple black dress into a red-carpet number. Here’s how to get it right.

Step 1. Unless you have the most luscious of lips, avoid deep reds. They can make lips look thinner. Instead choose a brighter, true red that’s universally flattering or try a modern take on red by applying one that’s infused with metallic shimmer. Try Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick in Hot Lava.

Step 2. Prevent bleeding by applying a bit of foundation around and even on lips so lipstick has something to stick to. Try Matte & Poreless Fit Me Foundation.

Step 3.  Be precise by tracing the outline of your lips first, then filling in the rest. Don't use red lip liner—if it’s not an exact match to your lipstick, the effect will be two-toned (not in a good way). Since you don’t want to end up with a red line around your mouth as it wears throughout the day, try a longlasting matte formula that won’t fade, like Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Pioneer.
