Essie Is Showing Their PRIDE by Partnering With Queer Eye Star Jonathan Van Ness

To celebrate Pride, Essie is partnering with hairstylist and Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness to create a fun nail look. This is the first time the brand has collaborated with a non-female celeb, and we think it’s obvious they made the right choice, Van Ness regularly rocking polish on a few nails in bright, colorful hues. “For me, polish has always been a form of self-expression, ” Van Ness said in an Instagram post announcing the collab, “Wearing it proud!”
The look — which features a mosaic rainbow moment — was created by Essie Global Lead Educator Rita Remark and only painted on a few nails, keeping in line with Van Ness’s signature manicure style. “Some of my favorite nail designs happen when you mix two styles together,” says Remark of the design, which took elements from abstract painting and marble design. Rather than using the traditional rainbow shape, Remark splashed the shades across the nail to achieve its playful, artistic vibe.
To get the look, start by applying Essie Smooth-E Base Coat to prime each nail. For the accent nails (you can pick your favorite fingers), use the shades Butler Please, In The Cab-ana, Come Here!, Chillato, Play Date, Geranium and Tart Deco. Apply each shade one at a time and use the polish brush to blend, creating a marble effect. The shades will appear melted together which is essential for getting that abstract look. Finish it off with a coat of Gel Setter Top Coat for added shine and to reduce chipping.
