The iconic French manicure gets an unexpected update this season with neon colors like blazing blue, acid green, and hot pink. “It’s a playful, edgy twist on the classic,” explains Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, artistic director of OPI. “We’ve done everything with French manicures, and this new color combination lets you try out the candy colors that are hot right now without making a big investment.”
Ready to make like Katy Perry and ditch the traditional look for a fun pop of color? Here's how.
Step 1: Start with short nails. The goal is an elegant nail with just a bit of length, so the tip should be no larger than a quarter of your entire nail. If your tips are too long, the look will be jarring.
Step 2: Apply a base coat. When you’re working with sheer tones, you want them to go on smooth, not blotchy. A layer of clear base coat will fill ridges and let your color go on smoother.
Step 3: Paint one coat of a sheer pinkish beige like Sally Hansen Beyond Perfect Protein Nail Color in Sheer Lotus Petal on the entire nail bed. You can skip a second coat unless you want it to look more opaque. Wait until this coat dries before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Finish with a long-wearing top coat. After covering the entire nail, apply an extra swipe along the neon strip and tip of the nail to prevent chipping. Try: Rimmel London Lasting Finish Professional Nail Polish Base & Top Coat.
