Our makeup maven and Beauty Squad member Lauren Cosenza supports trying anything in the quest for self-expression. Each month she pushes our cosmetic boundaries beyond the beauty comfort zone. In this edition she turns a friend a holiday makeover. Nothing represents holiday beauty better than a high-shine red lip. For many women, a single swipe of this powerful hue means instant glamour. You don’t need much else save for a little black liner, gorgeous glowing skin and tons of confidence. To prove my point, I reached out to my friend, Julie Kim. I first met Julie while doing makeup for Victoria’s Secret. She worked in marketing for the brand. She now works for its sister brand, Bath & Body Works. Julie is a laid-back natural beauty who sticks to a neutral makeup palette. But once you put her in scarlet, her look totally catches fire. Here’s the breakdown of Julie’s transformation from her everyday next-to-nude complexion to holiday party perfection: Face Step 1: To create a flawless second skin, I applied Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Brightening Makeup all over Julie's face, using my hands to press in the product. Step 2: I tapped Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer on her cheekbones, bridge of her nose and cupid’s bow to beautifully bounce back light, which looks amazing in photos. Eyes Step 3: I patted the bronze shade from It Cosmetics Eye Shadow Trio in Pearl Luxe on her eyelids from the lashlines to creases to impart depth. Step 4: I pressed Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Bad to the Bronze over the eye shadow from the lashlines to creases to bump up the dimension. Step 5: I swept MAC Pigment in Blonde's Gold over the inner corners of Julie's eyes and onto the brow bones to enhance the overall glow. Step 6: I drew on winged liner, in a thin and neat flare, using Maybelline Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner, which is perfect for creating this type of precision cat eye. Step 7: I used Lorac Visual Effects Mascara in Black to lengthen and thicken her lashes. Lips Step 8: I glided on Bodyography Lip Liner in Crimson all over her lips to create a defined shape plus a long-wear layer. Step 9: I painted on Lancôme Rouge in Love High Potency Lipcolor in Sequence of Love for the perfect party pout. Tip: Apply a coat, blot, and then apply again. Step 10: I layered MAC Dazzleglass in Love Alert over Julie's lips as a finishing touch to add a wow factor via shimmer and shine. Julie looked gorgeous as she left my apartment. Here’s what she had to say about her makeover: Can you describe your daily makeup routine? For day, I wear tinted moisturizer, undereye concealer, bronzer and neutral shimmering eye shadow. I also curl my lashes. For night, I do the same but add shimmer powder, eyeliner and mascara. Do you like to try new beauty trends? I tend to stick to my neutral shadows, bronzer and blush shades. Do you think glamming it up for holiday parties is a fun opportunity to break from your typical beauty look or do you prefer to stick with what you know works for you? I think the holidays are a great opportunity to have fun with makeup. For my face, I stick with what works for me. But I would have fun with colored eyeliners or lip colors. What are your thoughts on the bright red glossy lip? I think a red lip is a great head-turner. How did you feel wearing this makeup? I thought the look was really fun and wearable. Perfect for a holiday party! How did people react to this makeup look on you? My boyfriend, Craig, being a fan of very minimal makeup, was a little overwhelmed by it. But people definitely noticed me. I actually really noticed that most on the subway. Would you re-create the look yourself? I would absolutely re-create the look, but in parts. I'd re-create the lip, the face and the eye shadow shades.
