Have you ever heard of a fashion capsule collection? For those of you shaking your heads, it’s basically a compilation of those basic wardrobe pieces that will always hold a place in your closet, no matter the trends that come and go or the changes in your personal taste and style. They stay relevant and important and will stand the test of time.
In understanding the importance of having an active fashion-centric capsule collection, we also discovered the need for one focused on beauty. With so many makeup products and options out there, it’s hard to figure out the ones that you should always keep in stock as the seasons (and trends) change. We decided to save you a headache or two, and compiled our own list of beauty essentials. To justify our selections, we compared each item to the fashion counterparts that would be found in your fashion capsule collection. How’s that for research?
If we’re truly honest with ourselves, we’d admit to keeping a leather jacket on-hand purely for the bada$$ factor. Come on, admit it, slipping on that well-fitting black leather (or faux leather) moto makes you feel pretty rebellious and game for anything.
Well, a sleek black eyeliner has a very similar effect. A perfectly lined lid or razor-sharp cat eye is guaranteed to transform any makeup look into a daring one. And all it takes is a steady hand (or edge of a business card).
Just as important as the slimming and sleek skinny jeans, are the comfy, worn-in boyfriend jeans. The soft, easy fit feels like pajamas, but is acceptable for everyday wear (you can even get away with dressing them up!).
The light-and-easy component that makes boyfriend jeans so great is also at work in tinted moisturizer or BB cream. While lightweight and gentle enough for daily use, it’s also got some color to it, so you can get away with wearing it instead of heavy foundations on a night out or more formal occasion. We love anything that takes two seconds to throw on.
Literally every human owns at least one white T-shirt. And why wouldn’t we keep our closets stocked with them? They are arguably the most reliable clothing item, as they are the perfect companion to any ensemble or bottom (jeans, pencil skirt, slacks, leather pants, etc.) and they make us feel like our outfits—and lives—are together.
We have similar warm and fuzzy thoughts about concealer. With its concealing prowess, hiding every blemish and imperfection in sight, we can’t imagine life without this little miracle workers. They make our faces feel fresh and flawless and you can’t put a price on that. No matter the makeup look, you can bet concealer will be a component … always and forever.
Ahhhh the little black dress. These noir-colored little numbers have a way of turning a “blah” day into a beautiful one. The thing about LBDs is that they come in various silhouettes and varieties so we are able to find one that fits our bodies and personalities perfectly.
While not as dark as our go-to dress, the red lip works a very similar magic trick. With a swipe or two of crimson color, we are able to upgrade our look and give our self-esteem a little boost to boot. And with so many hue varieties—cherry, classic, oxblood, coral—there’s a red lipstick for every skin tone and every personality.
All clothing capsule collections include those special luxury items that make you look polished and put-together. The silk blouse is one of those items. Now unlike the polyester downgrade, true-blue silk feels like butter on our skin and has a way of making us look and feel like a million bucks, even if it’s a basic button-down style.
Now this may be a stretch but, you’d be telling a big fat lie if you said you felt totally flawless without your brows shaped and filled to perfection. Brows can make or break our faces, so a quality, precise brow pencil is in order. We are not just settling for some run-of-the-mill pencil with poor pigment or precision. Nope, only the crème de la crème for our faces. When you have a relationship as solid as the one with your brows, nothing but the best will do.
What would life be like without a good pair of sneakers? Would it mean you had to go running or hiking in flat, intricate gladiator sandals? Would you have to do your grocery shopping in stiletto pumps? The answers to these questions are too frightening to comprehend, so we’re going to stick to floating on a placid cloud that includes foam-soles and comfy canvas fabrics.
Not so fast: Here’s another scary thought for ya. Have you ever imagined your life without your favorite cheek & lip tint? While this practical twofer product often gets overshadowed by the more glamorous lipsticks and mascaras floating around in your arsenal, it’s the sleeper MVP of the whole shebang. A lip and cheek tint is the everyday item that can be thrown on for the most mundane occasions and tasks that you wouldn’t want to waste your fancy, special-occasion makeup on. And it makes you look good while you’re running these errands and going about your life. We bet you’re worshipping that rosy tint right now, aren’t ya?
There will never come a time that you won’t need a good pair of black ballet flats. The dressier counterpart to sneakers, these little black shoes align with pretty much anything in your closet. From dressing up a jeans-and-tee-shirt combo to dressing down a flowy dress, they rise to any occasion.
The same can be said for mascara. We’d venture to guess that a majority of you readers would consider black mascara the product you do not leave home without. It brightens and awakens the eyes, transforming your look instantly, no matter what mood or makeup theme you’re working with.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a fashion item more glam than gold cuffs. Whether worn with jeans and a simple blouse or a formal gown, a shimmery accessory puts the “fab” in fabulous.
A good highlighter—both in liquid and powder form—adds a similar type of “oomph” to your overall makeup look. The illuminating effect of highlighter heightens the intensity and visibility of your makeup, so even the most natural, no-makeup makeup look stands out. And, hey, there's nothing wrong with making yourself known, so pass the highlighter, please.
