The Top Fall 2012 Beauty Trends

The fall 2012 ready-to-wear shows didn't hold back when it came to beauty. Designers from New York to Paris delivered bold and daring makeup looks, with plenty of vibrant colors, conceptual shapes and textured finishes, to shake up the coming season. Now that September is nearly here, we've rounded up the top eight trends to get inspired by now.

MULBERRY LIPS
Seen at: Badgley Mischka, Christian Siriano, Etro, Gucci, Rochas, Viktor & Rolf and Yves Saint Laurent (pictured here)
Perhaps the most prolific runway beauty trend was a vampy and nearly-goth lip, made up in a range of hues from bordeaux to almost black. Christian Siriano and Yves Saint Laurent featured high-gloss versions, while Gucci presented a plum pout with a shot of red in the center.

APRÈS-SKI CHEEKS
Seen at: A.F. Vandevorst, Michael Kors (pictured here), Mulberry, Rodarte and Temperley London
Cheeks often play a supporting role in a beauty routine, but this season they took center stage at many shows. Frenzied flushes of color were seen at Michael Kors, where cheeks appeared to be chapped by the cold, and at Rodarte, where they looked bronzed by the sun. The fuchsia racing stripes at A.F. Vandevorst gave off a strong appeal, seemingly inspired by Grace Jones. To translate this effect for the everyday, makeup artist Rob Scheppy says, “Go for blush colors in pink, red or poppy."

WHITE SHADOW
Seen at: Fendi (pictured here), Marni, Miu Miu, Mugler and Giambattista Valli
Rather than moody hues for the colder months, eye shadow tended to be snow white. Mugler and Miu Miu painted on crisp swooshes that looked austere and graphic. On the other hand, Giambattista Valli, Marni and Fendi concentrated a flurry of alabaster on the inner and outer corners of eyes. “This current out-of-the-box interpretation of ‘60s glam is a not-so-subtle way to keep all eyes on you,” says Scheppy. “Keep it edgy and skip the mascara or add black liner and lashes for a dreamy, more playful approach.”

BOLD BROWS
Seen at: Chanel (pictured here), Missoni, Prada and Vera Wang
Full brows have undoubtedly been making a comeback in recent years, but none could compare to the extreme furrows seen this year. Chanel stole the show with crystal-themed brows that took three hours per pair to make, but Prada was not far behind either with traffic-cone-orange versions that took on a theatrical appeal.

COLORED FRENCHIES
Seen at: Badgley Mischka (pictured here), Behnaz Sarafpour, Bill Blass, Charlotte Ronson, Donna Karan and Thakoon
The traditional French manicure has gotten a makeover with today’s version featuring a colorful twist on the original nail art classic. “The new French tip is a thinner line than your usual French mani, with just a subtle sliver at the edge,” says nail artist Miss Pop. Aubergine bases with contrasting tips were seen at Charlotte Ronson, Badgley Mischka and Bill Blass, while nude versions with dark edges appeared at Donna Karan and Thakoon. “Using a metallic shade, like the gorgeous manis at Behnaz Sarafpour, will be more forgiving to your handiwork,” Miss Pop adds.
Get the look: Use Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Dark Side of the Moon as a base with a thin swipe of Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Nefertiti on edges (which were the same shades used at Badgley Mischka). Another great gold alternative? Essie Nail Polish in Good as Gold.

IRIDESCENT SMOKY EYES
Seen at: Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Roberto Cavalli (pictured here) and The Blonds
The new spin on the classic smoky eye is characterized by vibrant, iridescent hues that would make even a butterfly jealous. Prismatic cerulean, opalescent royal purple and multifaceted emerald were stunning at Roberto Cavalli, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu and The Blonds. To make the look more wearable, Scheppy suggests using three monochromatic shades. “Use the lightest shade to highlight under the brow bone and along the inner corners of eyes, and the darkest hue along your lash line to define your eye shape," he says. "Then add a touch of the most vivid color to the center of your lid up into the crease to make your eyes look bigger.”
Get the look: Pair MAC Eye Shadow in Club with the two green shades in YSL Ombres 5 Lumieres in 11 Midnight Garden, or stick with the three purple hues in the YSL palette.

GEOMETRIC LINER
Seen at: Altuzarra, Anna Sui (pictured here), Erdem, Jen Kao, L.A.M.B., Lanvin, Mary Katrantzou, Nahm and Rachel Zoe
Winged eyeliner got a lot more catty this season with detailed lines and abstract shapes. “Graphic liners are a great new way to use your makeup as an accessory,” Scheppy says. The strokes were stacked and angular at Altuzarra and Mary Katrantzou, while the streaks burst with color at Anna Sui, L.A.M.B. and Nahm in energetic cobalt and vibrant teal hues.
Get the look: For bold black lines, try L’Oréal Lineur Intense Brush Tip Liquid Eyeliner in Carbon Black, and for a pop of color, try CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Blue Boom.

SCARLET EYES
Seen at: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Donna Karan (pictured here), Mugler and Zac Posen
Red has long been a staple for lips, but crimson eyes? Now that’s fresh. “Think of it as an updated twist from the traditional pink cheek and red lip,” Scheppy says. The ruby shade was concentrated and sharp at Mugler and 3.1 Phillip Lim, and took on a softer, more diffused look at Donna Karan. “You can try this romantic look with a blast of scarlet washed all over your lid paired with a pale pink lip,” Scheppy adds.
