The smoky eye is the stiletto of beauty: sexy, stylish, flattering, and able to elevate any ensemble instantly. While we’d love to tumble around in our six inchers and wear false lashes all day, sometimes it’s best to bring it down a notch for daytime.
Lucky for us, the smoky eye made some very daytime-appropriate appearances on the Spring 2013 runways. Seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs, BCBG, and Jill Stuart, the daytime smoky is a softer take on its sultry predecessor and we’re dying to give it a whirl. Here are some expert tips on how to master the look.
1. Close to the Lash
To keep this look daytime appropriate, remember that a little smoke goes a long way.
Professional Makeup Artist Dell Ashleygave us this tip: “To keep it from looking harsh, line only the inside or waterline of the eye with eye liner and smudge the eye shadow around the eye, very close to the lash line.”
2. Softer Shades
This is also a great opportunity to put away the black and play with softer shades, like bronze, purple, or brown. L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Eye Shadow in Cupa Joe and Yves Saint Laurent Ombres 5 Lumieres in Midnight Garden would be great colors to try.
3. Neutral Accompaniments
The final step to making this look daytime appropriate is keeping the rest of the face neutral. Go for a nude lip and natural face, as too many focal points will make your face look overdone.
If you like to up the intensity for nighttime, Dell Ashley suggests you, “add more of the shadow higher on the lid and under the bottom lash line. Then use a pencil around the eye- upper and lower lash lines- for more definition.”
What are your thoughts on a daytime smoky eye? Would you every wear this look in your daytime routine?
