How to Get Modern Twiggy Makeup in Just Three Steps

Halloween or not, one of the coolest aspects of makeup is its ability to literally allow you time travel — whether you prefer to head back to the days of Cleopatra or the origin of mascara. Today, we’re taking you back to the cool days of 1965 modeling, when Twiggy ruled the pages of magazines near and far. Ahead, we tapped NYC-based makeup artist Anne Kohlhagen for a modern twist on the classic Twiggy eye makeup look. Here’s how to master it in just three steps.

STEP 1: Apply Your Cat Eye

The first step in any Twiggy makeup look is her classic cat-eye. Here, Kohlhagen used the IT Cosmetics Superhero Liner to nail the upper lash look. “When recreating her liner, make sure your line is super thick and only slightly winged out,” she notes.

STEP 2: Apply Your Bottom Liquid Liner Lashes

Next, creating Twiggy’s iconic bottom lashes is key. “Using the same pen, keep the point facing down to create the tiny lashes,” says Kohlhagen, “and dab it on the bottom lid, just under the lash line, leaving little spaces in between.” Nailing down the tiny lines takes some practice, so you might want to test it out a few times before your final go.

STEP 3: Finish With a Lifting Mascara

To complete the look, Kohlhagen used the NYX Professional Makeup On The Rise Liftscara for just the right amount of volume. “Use several coats in a zig-zag motion, starting from the base of the lashes and working out toward the ends of the lashes,” she says. This will guarantee a fluffy, lifted and doe-eyed Twiggy eye.

STEP 4: Keep The Rest of the Face Natural

For a subtle finish, Kohlhagen recommends keeping the rest of the face clean. “Add a soft fluffy brown for a subtle cheek color, so that the eyes pop and remain the focus,” she says. “You can also matte out the skin to create the ultimate ’60s monochromatic vibe.”
