There are a number of reality competition shows I just don't get (don't even get me started on the ridiculousness that is "Cupcake Wars"), but here's one that actually looks intelligent, entertaining, and, best of all, can provide inspiration and practical advice for aspiring makeup artists: It's called Face Off, and it premieres tonight on the Syfy Network.
The show pits 12 professional makeup artists against one another to compete in increasingly challenging makeup design competitions, including doing a full-body paint job on a model and crafting their own original horror villains. The contestants will be judged in just about every genre of special effects makeup, including prosthetics, 3-D design, sculpting, eye enhancers, casting, and molding. But what ultimately convinced me that this show isn't mere fluff: The judges are all top movie special effects makeup artists—including three-time Academy Award winner Ve Neill, who did makeup for all three Pirates of The Caribbean movies and transformed Johnny Depp into Edward Scissorhands—and not just the usual line up of C-list celebs vying for bitchiest on-screen commentary.
If you're an aspiring makeup artist—or even if you just love doing your friends' makeup—I highly recommend checking out the show. Even though special effects makeup is theatrical, you can learn a lot about basic techniques, color, and face shape by watching how these people work.
Face Off premieres tonight at 10/9c. For more info on the show, or to check out their amazing time-lapse videos of people being literally transformed through makeup, click here.
