By the beach, outside a castle, in a studio loft or under the big lights, your wedding day is as unique as you are. And no matter where you’re getting married, there’s a perfect makeup formula to make you look great all day long. Use our list below to find your perfect match for wedding day makeup bliss.
Destination: Beachside in sunny Miami
Waterproof makeup, which holds up best in hot and humid climates, is as necessary as your maid of honor. A must-pack for easy criers: L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara. Another (gentler) option is a "water-resistant" formula that stands up to a light amount of water (i.e. tears, mist, or sweat).
When you apply waterproof products, act fast. “Waterproof eyeliner, for example, doesn’t go on as smoothly and if you make a mistake, you have to remove it right away,” says Raychel Wade, a makeup artist and founder of Cheek To Chic. Taking off eye makeup at the end of the night can be a bit of a chore, too. Pros love Lancôme Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Makeup Remover because its oil-based formula really does take off every stitch of liner, shadow and mascara.
Destination: An elegant European manor
Your wedding is befitting of its majestic setting: there’s a large wedding party, a full day’s schedule and lots of wining and dining. Look for long-wear formulas (like Maybelline Superstay 24HR Makeup)
that will take you from early morning prep with your bridesmaids to late night dinner and dancing. “With big weddings, a bride often has her makeup done at least two hours before she says ‘I do.’ To keep the bride looking her best throughout the day, long-wear makeup is best,” says celebrity makeup artist, Kimara Ahnert.
Extended wear foundations and lipsticks can be drying. Make sure to prep the skin with a primer before applying any long-wear product so that it doesn’t settle into lines and crust up, says Wade.
Destination: A swanky, New York City studio loft
You’re partying in a studio—the lights, scenery and setting were made for taking photos! High-def or HD makeup is ideal since it gives skin a flawless finish. (It’s especially helpful when your photographer uses a HD camera, which tends to be less forgiving.) “HD powder, foundation and blush are formulated with light diffusing ingredients which make skin look smoother and more luminous,” says Ahnert.
HD foundations and powders don’t necessarily look the most natural. “HD makeup offers medium to full coverage so it’s not always ideal for warm days in high-summer when you want your skin to show through,” says Wade, who uses Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation on brides who want that full-coverage/red carpet look.
Destination: Vegas, baby!
Vegas brings unexpected possibilities; you need makeup that can take you from The Little White Wedding Chapel at noon to a midnight game of poker. Thanks to its high pigment load, airbrush makeup is long-lasting without feeling too heavy. “There’s a lot more pigment than in traditional makeup and it takes longer for it to wear off,” says says Cory Bishop, global artist for Temptu.
The steep price and learning curve make airbrush makeup more ideal for brides who plan on hiring a makeup artist for the day. But, if you insist on DIY, the beginner-friendly Temptu Airbrush Makeup System comes with an instructional DVD to get you started.
