There are many reasons to love summer—but when you live in New York City as I do, one of the most exciting things about this time of year is storing away all your somber black clothes that you live in the other nine months of the year and filling your closet with vibrant, punchy colors. I stock mine full of flirty dresses in zesty colors like canary yellow, turquoise, and hot pink. And while I look as cheerful as can be in these dresses from the neck down, I often find myself resorting to boring ol' nude makeup when I wear one of them, because anything too colorful seems like overkill. This works just fine for daytime, but what about nighttime when I want to wear more makeup? The answer came today when I laid eyes on photos from yesterday's Yves Saint Laurent Resort show here in NYC (check them out above). Suddenly, my entire makeup outlook for summer shifted. Makeup artist Aaron de Mey, who created the look for the show (and who also serves as Lancôme’s artistic director of makeup), chose a deep blood-red lip color to go with all the hits of fuchsia, violet, and coral throughout the collection. And you know what? It works! I would never have thought of doing such a thing, but that's why he's the genius makeup artist and I'm not. I love the unexpected-ness of this look, and taking a very fall-like of color and making it work in the summer. It also adds a certainly elegance to the playful bright clothes. It reminds me of something Katherine Hepburn would have put together back in the '50s—simple yet striking. To get a similar look to the one at the show, try Lancôme Color Design Lipcolor in Scarlet Siren. Then tell us, what do you think of wearing dark red lipstick with bright clothes? Would you ever try it? PHOTOS FROM STYLE.COM
