Messy buns are a go-to hairstyle on days when you oversleep and are rushing out the door, but they can also be a trendy, effortless style for any occasion. With just a few tweaks — like adding a fun headband or pumping up the volume — you can turn any messy bun into an elevated style. Below find five simple ways to take your messy bun from average to exciting courtesy of some of our favorite Instagram influencers.

Low Scrunchie Detail

Forget securing hair at the nape of your neck with a regular hair tie. Instead, add some personality with a fun scrunchie. Right now we’re especially loving velvet scrunchies for fall.

Fun Space Buns

Two messy buns are definitely more fun than one. Divide your hair in half and then secure two perfectly imperfect buns on either side of your head. Lock them in place with the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Hold Volume Hairspray.

Bold Accessory

Headbands are an easy way to elevate any messy bun — choose any style, color or pattern to make an effortless hairdo look extra chic.

Full-Bodied Top Knot

Adding extra volume to your messy bun can take it from drab to fab. While your hair is damp, apply the Garnier Fructis Sky-Hi Volume Mousse and blow dry before securing your hair in a bun. Allow a few pieces of hair to fall around your face for an effortless, tousled look.

Faux Headband

Instead of adding an accessory, let your hair be the accessory. Leave a long section of hair at the nape of your neck out of the bun and wrap it around your head (like a headband) before securing with bobby pins like @chris.styles.mai.hair did here. For added dimension, loosely curl face-framing sections and let them hang down.
