Want to Wear Makeup During Your Next Workout? Read This FirstAugust 21, 2017
Wearing makeup while working out is nothing if not controversial. While some can’t imagine stepping into the gym without looking ready for the ‘gram, others are #teamnomakeup while getting their sweat on. Whichever side you’re on, get the scoop from NYC dermatologist Dr. Jeremy Fenton of Schweiger Dermatology group on what exactly happens to your skin when you’re sweating it out with a full face.
We’ll give you the bad news first: According to Dr. Fenton, wearing your longwear foundation during your next spin class isn’t the best idea. When you sweat during a workout –– particularly an intense one — your skin secretes sweat in order to control your body temperature. Heavy face makeup can get in the way by clogging your pores. This gets worse when you use your towel to wipe off that extra sweat. When your wipe you face, the friction of the towel combined with sweat can compress the dirt and makeup deeper into your skin. His recommendation? Use a makeup wipe to clean your face before hitting the gym.
If you can’t bear to work out barefaced, Dr. Fenton suggests mineral and oil-free makeup (with SPF for outside workouts!) for those with acne prone skin. While this type of makeup is less likely to clog your pores, you probably won’t emerge from a pilates class looking runway ready.
The good news? Makeup is evolving to include workout-proof and working out-friendly makeup.
