Beauty Influencer Kristen Leanne Dishes On Her Best Summer Makeup Tips

The YouTube beautysphere is a place unlike any other. We can easily spend several hours of our lives watching tutorial after tutorial, mesmerized by game-changing makeup looks and avoiding our real-life obligations. If this sound familiar, you’ve probably (definitely) come across Kristen Leanne. She’s a cruelty-free beauty vlogger who produces everything from makeup tutorials, drugstore makeup reviews, challenges, chats about life, hair-coloring tips and so much more — all with a spunky personality we love. So, to say the least, we trust her judgement when it comes to beauty and the vlogger has her very own makeup collection with Urban Decay to prove that we should.

We had a chance to chat with Kristen Leanne about her best makeup tips for summer. Ahead, check out seven warm-weather rules she lives by.

Waterproof It

“I suggest wearing waterproof mascara as the last coat on your upper and lower lashes or just use waterproof mascara. Mascara transferring all over the place is a nightmare. Avoid it all together with this trick.”

Be Sure to Get Your SPF

“Wear a breathable foundation or BB with SPF. Protecting your skin is important and should not be overlooked. Make sure your foundation or BB cream has SPF in it, or find a non-oily sunscreen meant for your face to apply prior to foundation or BB cream.”

Less is More

“No need to overdo it with lashes, extra bronzer, liner, etc. During summer, it's hot enough. Keeping makeup on can be challenging at best, so why make the task that much harder? I prefer to stick with a more fresh, barely-there look for summer — especially for events or outings that are going to last more than an hour.”

Always Start With a Clean Face

“Never, I repeat, never apply makeup to an unclean face. You always want to start with a fresh, squeaky clean canvas. Before you went to bed, you most likely sludged on some awesome skincare or oils and went to bed. In which case, it got onto your pillow, along with dirt and oil from your hair, and inevitably all of that made its way onto your skin. No bueno for makeup application.”

Never Skip Moisturizer

“If your skin has a tendency to be oily, you might be wondering how you can pile on moisturizer before makeup without it sliding off?! The key is (even if you do not have oily skin) to use a water-based moisturizer. This will soak into your skin, hydrating it for hours.”

Control Oil

“If you have oily skin, find your favorite oil-control product and use it on your T-zone (or anywhere else you tend to get oily) then apply makeup. You can also use an eyeshadow primer on your nose if that's an area your makeup never wants to stick to.”

Set Like You Mean It

“Set your makeup/skin up for success. Don't skip setting your foundation with setting powder and do not forget a setting spray. Skipping setting powder is something you do NOT want to do. It's like baking cookies, but forgetting to turn the oven on. No one wants their makeup sliding around on their face, but skipping this step is a surefire way to make sure that happens. You also want to find a setting spray that fits your needs. Maybe you want a mattifying setting spray, or maybe you need a dewy setting spray — just don't forget to set it.”
