How to Even Out Your Skin Tone in 1 Minute or Less

Some days call for a full-face makeup look consisting of fierce winged liner, blinding highlighter and a contour as sharp as a knife, but other days call for just a clean, flawless, even complexion. We reached out to celebrity makeup artist Dean Fournier to share his best tips to even out skin. The best part? You can master it in a minute or less.

Ahead, Fournier shows us how to pick the right products, which order to use them and application techniques to achieve a flawless, even skin tone every time.

Start With Primer

“In order to speed up your complexion perfection, don’t skip primer,” says Fournier. “A good primer will help smooth out your skin and allow makeup to glide on and blend easier and faster, not to mention last all day and night.” If redness is a concern, Fournier recommends trying a color-correcting cream, which can double as primer, too. Check out Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer, a transparent, gel formula that’s great for all skin types.

Apply Foundation

“Next, apply a sheer to medium coverage foundation. Blend out with your fingers, then pat it in from your hairline to your jawline. This presses the product into your skin and gives you the most natural finish,” says Fournier. Avoid a full-coverage foundation, since that requires blending skills and can take a lot of time. Two formulas we love are Dermablend Smooth Liquid Camo Foundation and Urban Decay Naked Skin One and Done Complexion Perfection.

Pat Concealer Over Imperfections

“Many women who apply concealer before foundation end up wiping away most of their hard work without even realizing it,” says Fournier. “When choosing a concealer, go for an orangey-pink one if your main concern is under eye circles. If you’re looking to conceal redness, grab a yellow concealer. If you’re looking to cover pigmentation, use a stick or pot concealer as these deliver the most coverage. Be sure to pat (not wipe) to apply the concealer. Wiping concealer never allows it to build. A few pats and you’re done!” Two cult-fave options are the NYX Professional Makeup Hi Definition Photo Concealer Wand and Maybelline Instant Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer.

Dust on Setting Powder to Finish

Covering blemishes? “A quick dusting of a powder is an important last step to help even out skin texture around any bumps,” says Fournier. Lightly dust on IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Finishing Powder,  Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powderor another one of your faves.
