Dark brown or black hair is gorgeous as is, but if you’re looking to switch things up, don’t rule out blonde highlights — a bit of blonde against a rich chocolate or deep chestnut base color can actually add a ton of dimension and brightness. So whether you’re looking for a natural brown balayage or some standout highlights, we’re sharing inspiration for dark hair with blonde highlights, below.

Money Piece

If you want to achieve a blonde feel without fully covering your natural shade, ask your colorist for a money piece. The brighter front pieces will make your eyes pop, but you’ll still maintain a richer color at your roots.

Blonde + Brown = Bronde

For major dimension, a bronde balayage is the way to go. Your darker tone will seamlessly blend into a lighter hue from the mid-hair shaft to your ends. Customize the specific tone of your bronze-meets-blonde color with your stylist. This look is also very low maintenance and will grow out naturally if you decide the blonde life isn’t for you.

Just a Pop

If you have dark black hair and just want to dip your toe into the blonde world, ease into it slowly. Add a few wispy pieces throughout to test the waters before completely committing. The high-contrast look is definitely trending right now and gives off an edgy vibe. The lighter areas will really stand out when you pull your hair into a ponytail or bun.

Chunky Highlights

Give your dark hair dimension by layering in swaths of caramel and blonde color throughout. Chunky highlights have made a comeback, and it’s no surprise why. The hair color technique gives your hair instant warmth and lets you play with a few different tones to help customize your new color.

Ashy Accents

If you’re toying with the idea of blonde highlights, we suggest easing into by opting for an ashy tone. While it’s not a true blonde, the lighter shade will help lift your color and still give you a bit of brightness. Test this subdued shade out for the winter or go all-out with a lighter blonde come spring or summer. Worried about warding off brassiness in between your salon appointments? We love the Matrix Brass Off All-In-One Toning Leave-In Spray, a leave-in, pre-styling product that helps to neutralize brassy and orange tones and condition the hair.
