Lizzo Shut Down the Red Carpet Last Night — Here’s How to Get Her Hair Look

Hi, Makeup.com here to remind you that we love Lizzo. She can do absolutely no wrong and looked good as hell (because, duh) during last night’s big music award show. Her old Hollywood glam, big bouncy curls and chic-meets-sparkly gown have rendered us officially speechless — and that doesn’t happen, you guys. Even though we found ourselves at a loss for words, we couldn’t leave you without all the tools, tips and products (we can never forget the products) you need to recreate Lizzo’s hair look at home. The logical solution? Let her hairstylist for the night, Shelby Swain (aka the Beyonce of BabyHair), do the talking and the teaching. Find a step-by-step tutorial on how to get Lizzo’s shiny, frizz-free old Hollywood waves, ahead.

STEP 1: Prep the Hair

“Preparation is the foundation and key to any great hair look,” says Swain. “You want to begin with a clean canvas, so washing and conditioning well is a must.” She likes to use the Matrix Total Results Dark Envy Shampoo, Conditioner and Hair Mask. “They bring the shine, neutralize any red undertones and allow for maximum results and product absorption for styling.”

STEP 2: Blow It Dry

To make sure that volume was of the essence, Swain used the Matrix Total Results Curl Please Contouring Lotion on damp hair and then used the GHD Blow Dryer to give Lizzo’s hair next-level volume. “Coming into 2020 we wanted to give a nod to old Hollywood glam with a sprinkle of Cher! This has been a big year and I wanted to showcase that in the hair as well.” Make sure the hair is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

STEP 3: Curl and Spray

“I curled and finished the hair using the GHD Curve Curling Iron, Matrix Total Results High Amplify Proforma Hairspray and Matrix Total Results High Amplify Flexible Hold Hairspray to help build volume, lock in the style and still provide the hair with natural movement,” says Swain. She created uniform and unidirectional curls to achieve the elegant, vintage wave reminiscent of old Hollywood. The MVP product that pulled (and kept) this look together was the Matrix Total Results High Amplify Proforma Hairspray. “It really allowed me to lock in the waves without giving the hair that crunchy look and provides the final look with a natural shine.”

STEP 4: Fight Flyaways

To make sure that Lizzo’s locks were free of frizz and flyaways, Swain used the Matrix Total Results Curl Please Defrizzer Gel and a mist of the Matrix Total Results High Amplify Flexible Hold Hairspray. “I loved how it gave a firm hold and locked in the style but also allowed the hair to move freely through Lizzo’s performance.”
