Clowns tend to get a bad rap. Whether they’re jumping out at random teenagers in the woods or scaring small children (or, let’s be real, even adults) at birthday parties, they don’t exactly get the love that unicorns, cats or fairies do. While you can expect to see tons of cute Halloween costumes like the previous examples (in part because they can be easily recreated with makeup), clowns will likely be more scarce. But, clowns can be cute, too! Just swap in pastels or jewel tones in place of primary or add a glam element with glitter and rhinestones. The options are endless.

Need some ideas for your own clown costume this Halloween? Keep scrolling for some of our favorite beauty inspo from Instagram.

Lots of Lashes

From the teal lashes to the red lipstick, every aspect of this colorful clown look by @beautybybb is amazing. A multicolored eyeshadow palette and the NYX Professional Makeup Limited Edition Jumbo Lashes in Heat It Up will help you get a similar look.

Black and White

A black liquid liner, like the Valentino Beauty Twin Liner Eyeliner, will be the MVP in creating a costume similar to this one by @orane.ae. Of course, to really ace this intricate look, you’ll need a black lipstick too. We love the Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Thrill Seeker.

A Take on Jewel Tones

Not into primary colors or pastels? Create a clown makeup look with jewel tones instead, like @aimee.makeupxx.

Glam Clown

Large flecks of glitter totally make this look by @make.mia.up. If you’re worried about fallout and you want to stick with a shimmery shadow for the eye details instead, we recommend layering the shimmery NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Glow Shots over a face paint pigment, like the NYX Professional Makeup SFX Face and Body Paints.

Sad Clown

When you score the “best costume” award at your Halloween party with this look, we have a feeling you’ll be anything but sad. However, in order to recreate this look by @johannastorme, you’ll want to embrace the emotion. We recommend using a lip liner, like the Lancôme Le Lip Liner in 132 Caprice to overline your lips, and then filling them in with a red lippie like the Valentino Beauty Rosso Valentino Refillable Lipstick in Red in Love.

Rhinestones Accents

There couldn’t be a better time to fully embrace your love for face gems than Halloween. We love how @ohmygeeee incorporated the sparkly detail into this look in a minimalist fashion.

Hot Pink Everything

Break out all your favorite hot pink makeup — the trending color gets all the attention in this look by @sincerely_mels. To recreate the precise details in this makeup look (like the tiny heart), we recommend picking up a hot pink eyeliner, like the Maybelline New York TattooStudio Limited-Edition Sharpenable Gel Pencil in Ultra Pink. Whichever lipstick you choose, make sure it's of a similar shade to your eyeshadow and eyeliner.

Deep Purple Hues

A vampy purple lipstick is the perfect tool to create a cool, monochromatic clown costume for Halloween, like this look by @lo_oz. If you need recommendations, we love the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lipstick in Doesn’t Matte-R.
