The Shimmering Body Oil You Have to Use on NYE

Glistening makeup on a night out doesn’t have to start and stop with your cut crease or face highlight. In fact, when the occasion calls for it, shimmer has a rightful place all over the body. For this New Year’s Eve-inspired shimmer tutorial, we tapped NYC-based makeup artist Jonet Williamson to share her best tips and tricks for wearing sparkling body oil all over your neck, decollete, arms and legs. Making your sparkle last all night long takes the right application and knowing where to put it in the first place. Here’s how to get the look.

Pick the Right Areas to Sparkle

Williamson’s first tip is all about choosing where to buff in your sparkling body oil. “You want to focus on areas of the body that naturally catch light — the shoulders, decollete, front of thighs and calves,” she says. This will give dimension to your body shimmer and will help you avoid looking like you fell head first into a bucket of glitter.

How to Prep for Sparkle

The real trick to maintaining your shimmery body glow starts with proper prep. “Apply a layer of body lotion first before your shimmering oil,” says Williamson. “This gives the skin a layer of hydration to ensure that the shimmering oil goes on smoothly and keeps a nice glow longer.” You can use a moisturizer of your choice, but we recommend something rich and hydrating, like Kiehl’s Creme de Corps

Use a Brush

Once you’ve prepped the areas of your body you want to sparkle, Williamson notes to always use a brush with your shimmering oil. Here, she applied the NYX Professional Makeup Love Lust Disco Shimmer Down Body Oil with a large stippling brush. “I find that when using your hands to apply shimmering oil, the pigment will cling more to your hands than wherever you’re applying it,” she says. That’s why you’ll always want to avoid rubbing it on with your palms and reach for bristles instead. It’s also important to remember to apply less than you’d think you’d need — a little shimmering body oil goes a long way — and you can always add more if you really don’t think it’s enough.
