Self Taught MUA @Chloeybeauty Shares Why Makeup Is the Perfect Outlet for Her

#WomanCrushWednesday celebrates our favorite influencers and cool women who work in the fashion and beauty space.

If you love a mesmerizing up-close eye or lip makeup Instagram, @Chloeybeauty by 19-year-old self-taught makeup artist Chloe Young might just be the account for you. This Dutch native stuns nearly 20K followers with her masterpiece lip art and beautiful eyeshadow creations. We recently chatted with Young to find out about her inspiration, what makeup means to her and what her beauty routine looks like when she’s not on the ’gram.

How did you get started with your makeup Instagram account?

I wanted to start a makeup page on Instagram for a very long time, especially after seeing more and more people doing it, but I was really scared I wouldn’t be good enough. I had a picture of a look I did saved for almost two months until one day I decided to just make an Instagram for makeup and post it. I was so scared it was going to flop, but I actually got quite a few nice comments which inspired me to keep going.

Where do you pull makeup inspiration from?

I can get inspired by basically everything. Sometimes I pull inspiration from another artist but it can also come from a cute decorative pillow I saw somewhere or just thinking about a fun color combo and start creating something.

Take us through the process of creating a new look — where do you start? I always start by putting on music, literally can’t do a look without it. After that, I either already have an idea and start to work on it, or sometimes I have to stare at my palettes and lipsticks for 30 minutes before an idea forms. I’m a huge perfectionist, so while creating the look I’m almost never happy with it until I see the finished results and the pictures I took of it.

Tell us what your makeup bag looks like on a daily basis.

My everyday makeup is extremely basic and takes me only about 15 minutes. I usually put on a bit of the L.A Girl HD Pro Conceal on my cheeks to make my skin tone looks more equalized and set it with a bit of powder. After that I put on some bronzer (the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil  is my absolute go-to) and of course some highlighter. For my eyes, I only do a subtle liner and some mascara and do my eyebrows with a colored brow gel.

What's your holy-grail makeup product and why?

Lately, I haven’t been able to live without the Morphe x James Charles Eyeshadow Palette. I love to create bright looks, and this palette really gives me no limits and the consistency of the shadows blend like a dream.

What's the last makeup product you totally demolished, and would you repurchase it?

The last product I finished was the Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Drug Lord. Not really a lipstick I wear on a daily, but I’ve used this for so many of my lip art creations, and I still love it so I would definitely repurchase it.

Favorite song to play when you're in the makeup zone?

Definitely Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen — this song never fails to make me feel creative and inspired.

What's your advice for an aspiring makeup blogger/influencer or artist?

Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do this. In the beginning you might feel very insecure because you feel like you need more followers or likes but just remember you’re doing this for yourself, so you can share your amazing talent with the world and one day people are going to notice it and appreciate it.

And finally, what does makeup mean to you?

Makeup means a lot to me. I’ve had to deal with very extreme anxiety and one of the only outlets I had was makeup. Just being able to come home and doing something I love and have so much passion for really made me feel like I could deal with all my struggles a little better.
