Prom hair is just as important as your makeup and dress. Yes, we realize that’s a strong statement, but the wrong hairstyle can make or break a formal look. And, you don’t want to take that kind of risk at prom, do you? We didn’t think so. To save you the heartache of hairdo-gone-wrong, we’ve compiled five hairstyles perfect for your big night. And, you can do them at home, so you’ll be saving a buck or two (or more!). Enjoy!

1. Chic Chignon

In the hair world, the chignon is a classic, tried-and-true ’do that never goes out of style. And, it literally goes with any and every dress and look. It’s fool-proof! Try adding a little pizazz to this style by accessorizing with bejeweled bobby pins or hair clips. And don’t forget to give it a good once- (or twice) over with a strong hold hairspray to make sure it withstands the dancing and after-party!

2. Fully-Done Half Updo

Who says you have to go all up for prom? Let your hair down … half way! Try a full, voluminous half-updo and see if your hair doesn’t make a statement on prom night! This look looks great with a vintage-style dress as it has a nice little retro twist to it. For an extra-sweet touch, add a bow!

3. Elegant Updo

Want to rock a salon-worthy ’do that looks more complicated than it actually is? Look no further! This über-chic crossover updo strikes the perfect balance between elegant and cool — and we love it!

4. Sleek, Twisted Pony

The sleek, simple pony is in for the season, and we put our own twist on it … literally. Try this super-slick look with an equally cool smoky eye and nude lip combo. It also works well with a form-fitting dress or strapless gown.

5. Messy Chignon

We know what you’re thinking: We already mentioned the chignon. You’re right. But sometimes, classic styles need an upgrade, and this mussed-up look is just that. Jump on the messy, bedhead look that’s all the rage by teasing up your classic bun and wearing it loose and slightly undone. Like its classic counterpart, the messy chignon works with any and all dresses and makeup styles, so go crazy!
