As she shifted from foot to foot, explaining the pieces in her upcoming collection with JC Penney and that “pockets make garments expensive, not lining” (who knew?), the beauty editor in me couldn’t stop guessing at her lip color and how she achieved those airspun curls. Luckily, we got the chance to find out. I recently caught up with the Black-ish star at the Tracee Ellis Ross for JCP event where she premiered her upcoming collection and gave us the inside scoop on how she stays so flawless.

When interviewing Ross, I expected a 10-step beauty routine, complete with expensive serums and potions. Instead, she shouted out an ingredient that’s survived every era and trend: water. She credits H2O — and plenty of sleep — for her radiant skin. Ross is also a big fan of hydration, complete with intense moisture masks and the like. One of her favorite places to soak up serums and moisturizers is on a plane, and we can’t help but agree. It’s the ideal place for layering and masking.

Known for her impeccable style and minimal, yet bold makeup looks I had to ask: How do you match your makeup to your wardrobe? Her answer was simple: A red lip works in any situation, and contrast is key. For a shimmery gold dress she suggested a dark eye and nude lip, and for sequined pink? Pink lips to match.
