Thanks to the marriage of Instagram artists and the Urban Decay NAKED Heat Palette, fiery red embers have been all the rage for cold-weather eye makeup — so it’s no surprise that this chromatic red trend is making its way into the hair world. We spoke to Matrix Artist Danielle Keasling on her best tips to achieve that sangria hair glow-up, and here’s what we learned.

Double Applying is Key

“To achieve the perfect sangria hair color is to double apply your color,” Keasling says. Red dye tends to wash out the easiest — this is why double coating your hair will help keep the color from fading. “Start with your desired tone and level ... and after you process your color, rinse, shampoo and rough dry the hair,” she notes. “Then, apply your favorite Color Graphics Lacquers formula for reds on top of that. The double application will provide intense shine and full saturation.”

If You’re Blonde, Don’t Forget a Clear Coat

To all the blondie’s out there, you want to make sure your stylist is adding clear to your formula. “Remembering to use clear will keep the lacquers from over depositing,” says Keasling. “On blondes and brunettes, think of this second application as a toner for control and shine.”

Proper Care and Maintenance Will Change the Game

Finally, taking care of your sangria hair properly will make or break it’s longevity. Keasling recommends using a color-protecting shampoo to get the job done. “To maintain your final results, whether red, blonde or brunette; use Biolage R.A.W. Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner (launching in February),” she advises. “Using cool water on your hair and avoiding high heat will also help preserve your color.”

Now, your hair will not only match your favorite makeup palette — it’ll last throughout the festive season and beyond.
