Whether you’re coloring your hair yourself — raise your hand if COVID-19 made you embrace at-home hair dye — or working with a colorist, there’s more to color-treated hair care than just the coloring process. Color-treated hair may react differently to some parts of your current routine, which is why we reached out to L’Oréal Paris consulting celebrity colorist Jonathan Colombini to make sure your strands stay healthy and shiny.

STEP 1: Choose a Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner

Regular shampoos and conditioners can strip your color and leave your hair looking dull. “Always opt for sulfate-free products, like those in the L’Oréal EverPure collections, as they will help keep color true and lasting longer,” says Colombini. Another option we love is the Matrix Keep Me Vivid Sulfate-Free Shampoo. For daily conditioners, Colombini adds, “I recommend anything that’s sulfate-free and moisturizing, especially for hair that’s been bleached. I love the EverPure Moisture Conditioner.”

STEP 2: Add a Leave-In Treatment

A leave-in treatment can help reverse damage to delicate color-treated hair, says Colombini. To repair hair, he says, you can use the Elvive Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream to help prevent damage and split ends. “It’s designed for those trying to grow out and maintain long hair, but can be used for anyone who wants to keep ends healthy.”

STEP 3: Protect Your Hair From Heat

When styling color-treated hair, it’s all about protecting your hair from heat, says Colombini. “Always use a heat protectant as the hair is already more prone to damage due to coloring,” he explains. We like  the Elvive Dream Lengths Heat Slayer Leave-In.
