While I’ve struggled with a combination skin type for a few years now, only recently has my scalp followed suit. Depending on the season and temperature, I’ll deal with a repetitive cycle of an oily, then flaky scalp and vice versa  — making it a challenge to soothe my roots for any prolonged period of time. I’ve tried and tested a lot of scalp scrubs and detox hair masks out there, but I’ve never found a product that balances the oil without drying out my scalp. That is, until Kiehl’s gifted me its new Amino Acid Scalp Detox Treatment Scrub and Moisture-Restorative Treatment Mask. Each addresses both of my concerns, and I couldn’t wait to put them to the test together.

First, I started with the Amino Acid Scalp Detox Treatment Scrub. This formula combines a 10-amino acid blend with sea salt and salicylic acid to gently slough away dead skin cells and build-up. It’s also suitable for all scalp types, including oily and sensitive. The first thing I immediately noted (and loved) about this scrub was the consistency and smell. It feels different in my hands than other scalp scrubs (which often melt once they come in contact with water). Instead, it’s thicker and lathers perfectly. I rubbed a generous amount onto my scalp, focusing on the oily areas around my hairline and at the nape of my neck. This scrub smells incredible as well, which gives it a leg up on the more medicinal-smelling scalp scrubs and treatments out there. As I scrubbed my roots, I noticed that the tiny beads of salt dissolved nicely and easily washed out  — not to mention, my scalp felt extremely smooth and detoxified after use.

After washing out the scrub, I applied a thin layer of the moisture mask all over my scalp from my forehead line down to my neck. This ultra-soothing formula contains a triple amino acid blend and coconut triglycerides, making it suitable for all scalp types but especially great for dryness and flakes. This one also smells glorious. After leaving it on for fifteen minutes, I washed it out and my scalp and roots felt silky to the touch and extremely revitalized.

After a few days, I saw absolutely no flakes and little oiliness. My hair was extremely soft and my scalp felt fresh, clean, non-stripped and totally congestion-free. If you, too, need some balance on your scalp when it's feeling too oily or dry, this combo is an absolute must-try.
