I take pride in my pin-straight hair — it’s easy to flat iron and fun to braid. When it comes to adding major volume and bounce to my hair, however, my strands leaves something to be desired (sometimes, they can’t even hold a curl for more than 30 minutes). To help ease my flat hair woes, I reached out to L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Hairstylist & Colorist Jonathan Colombini for his best volumizing tips and tricks, and here’s what he had to say.

It Starts When You Wash

If you have thin, flat hair, the trick is making your hair look fuller, which starts in the shower,” says Colombini. He recommends adding a volume-boosting shampoo and conditioner, like the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Shampooand Conditioner to give your locks a little bounce. “Post shower,” he says, “I suggest using a root booster like the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray.” Colombini says to spray this directly onto your roots and blow dry with your head tipped over to instantly create more volume.

Say Goodbye to Sulfates

Colombini adds that another hair volume killer is something often found in your generic shampoo: sulfates. “Make sure you always opt for sulfate free products, as products with sulfates can weigh down thin hair,” he says. This weight will only make hair even flatter and prevent your volume boosting efforts.

Lock it in Place

After you’ve prepped your hair with a sulfate-free, volumizing wash and boosted the roots, Colombini says to finish off your style with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Hairspray. This holds the volume without adding any extra weight.

Mix Up Your Routine

In order to really make your volume last for more than a few hours, Colombini notes that the real trick is to always switch up your regimen. “After your hair becomes acclimated to a certain shampoo, conditioner and styling products, I recommend changing it up to give your hair some new love.” This means that the trick really is to keep your hair routine everchanging for maximum volume — and Colombini guarantees that “your hair will love you right back!”
