The Hollowed-Out Cat-Eye Liner Look To Try If You're Bored With Your Usual Wing

If you’re tired of your classic, sharp cat eye, we don’t blame you. For an updated take on the same old liquid pencil wing or even gel swoop, we’ve got a hollowed-out liner tutorial that might just perk up your entire routine. Ahead, we tapped NYC-based makeup artist Anne Kohlhagen to give us the step-by-step breakdown.

STEP 1: Start With a Pencil

According to Kohlhagen, the key to mastering a hollowed-out eyeliner look is starting with a pencil. “Use a soft, kohl pencil like the L’Oréal Paris Pro Last Liner to draw out and perfect the shape of your graphic line,” she says. Keep the line crisp by going slowly, using a light hand. “With a pencil, any mistakes you make can easily be fixed with Q-tips at this point.” Starting at the inner corner, draw along the upper lash line, curving it upward and tracing along the crease. Then go back in and outline the inner corner to complete the hollowed effect.

STEP 2: Set With a Liquid Liner

“After you have the shape and placement of the line you want, go over it with a waterproof liquid liner to seal it in,” says Kohlhagen. This will set the look, and once dried, will ensure that it won’t crease throughout the day. Our go-to liner to use for this is the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Liquid Eyeliner in Black because it’s high-shine, waterproof and really crisp.

STEP 3: Finish With a Pop of Color

Finally, to tie the look together, Kohlhagen suggests adding a touch of eyeshadow for more definition and a little personality. “If your graphic line is concentrated on the upper lid, make sure to leave a blank space on the lower lash line for a colored shadow,” she says. Here, she used a beautiful lilac from the NYX Professional Makeup Midnight Chaos Shadow Palette by dipping a pencil-tipped makeup brush in it to create a soft line. “This helps create balance and gives the eye an added pop of color,” she says.
