how to keep lip gloss from moving

Glossy lips add a touch of shine and sparkle to any makeup look, but the hardest part about rocking them is getting your lip gloss to stay put. Between drinking, eating and talking, gloss has the tendency to streak, smudge or disappear if not applied properly, which is why we tapped J.Brandon Correa, a YSL Beauty national makeup artist, for his tips and tricks on keeping your lip gloss in place throughout the day.

TIP 1: Create a Soft Barrier Around Your Lips

Correa’s first tip in ensuring that your lip gloss doesn’t move is to create a barrier around the lips using a concealer like the YSL Beauty Touche Éclat High Cover Radiant Concealer. “This will help define and enhance your lip shape, and can also help the gloss from bleeding and smudging,” he says.

TIP 2: Prime Your Pout

Priming your lips is key to making lip gloss stay throughout the day. Correa recommends the YSL Beauty Top Secrets Lip Perfector, which hydrates the lips and adheres strongly to lip products layered on top of it.

Tip 3: Apply Gloss at the Center of Your Lips

Next, apply your gloss. We love the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro Gloss Plump with Hyaluronic Acid or the YSL Beauty Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick Balm. During application, focus the gloss on the center of your lips to allow it to spread naturally toward the perimeter of the mouth without overflowing. “This will reduce the amount of smudging and increase longevity,” Correa adds.

TIP 4: Proceed With Caution

“Avoid pressing your lips to anything other than themselves to maximize the wear of a glossy lip,” says Correa. He also recommends layering various glossy lip shades together for a longer-wearing finish, or opting for a stain. “Try dressing your lips with the YSL Beauty Vinyl Cream Lip Stain — it’s a longwearing liquid lipstick that delivers full coverage and shine,” he says.
