Wearing a glittery eyeshadow or highlight is becoming a thing of makeup’s past, and glitter eyeliner is well on its way to replacing these striking trends. In order to get to the bottom of how to master applying one like a pro, we tapped NYC-based makeup artist Anne Kohlhagen. Here, she breaks down how to get the look.

Avoid Loose Glitter

When applying glitter eyeliner, it’s important that you’re choosing the right product. “Loose glitter doesn’t tend to stick to eyeliner once it’s dry, so I would avoid applying it,” says Kohlhagen. This means that you should stick to liquid liners that are already have the glitter formulated in them, like the NYX Professional Makeup Glitter Goals Liquid Eyeliner. “If you are going to experiment with loose glitter around your eyes, use a type that is opthamologist tested,” she adds.

Use One to Two Swipes

As far as building your glitter line, you want to wait for it to completely dry before adding another layer for your desired amount of glitter, Kohlhagen adds. On the model seen here, she used the color Crystal Ball — a champagney silver blend — to build a cat eye with two overlapping swipes. “I wouldn’t build it up too thick because it may crack off if there is too much product, so I would stick to one to two layers.”

How to Avoid Creasing

The easiest way to avoid creasing is to let the product sit naturally on the eyes, and finish off with a setting spray like the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. “Beforehand, you should make sure the eyelid is prepped with a little concealer or primer,” Kohlhagen notes. And this will guarantee a clean, precise glitter liquid line every time.
