Is This Mascara Hack the Secret to Voluminous Lashes? An Editor Tests It Out

I have a beauty confession: I’m obsessed with my eyelashes. My makeup is never complete without swiping on a few coats of my favorite lengthening mascara to make them look like falsies. I’ve tried pretty much every mascara under the sun, but I’m always looking for new ways to give my lashes a voluminous, fanned out effect. I recently came across a unique video from Lina Sheikhzada on Instagram where she applies her mascara in a vertical zigzag motion before brushing her lashes out as usual to add even more volume and length. Though I’ve heard of professional makeup artists regularly using this method, too, I never thought to give it a shot until now.

Once I completed my face makeup, I used my current go-to mascara — the L’Oréal Paris Bambi Oversized Eye Mascara — to test out this hack. Holding the brush vertically, I swiped it left and right along my upper lashes about 10 times. I was worried about my lashes clumping up, which they’re sometimes prone to doing, but once I brushed them out as I normally do, they fanned out beautifully with no clumps in sight.

Though I did like the result, I didn’t see much of a difference (if any) compared to when I just applied my mascara as usual. Maybe there was a bit more of an outwards fanning effect, but not enough to give my lashes a definitive ‘wow’ factor. Personally, I don’t see myself using this hack in everyday life, especially because it slowed down my routine by a few minutes (I’m always running late, so I need to streamline my routine as much as possible).

This trick is definitely fun to try, though, and it’s simplicity makes it great for makeup beginners. But as for me, I’m going to say, thank you, next!
