Oval-shaped makeup brushes are designed to mimic the way your fingers move across your face and fit comfortably in your hands. The fact that they look great on a vanity is an added bonus. Because of their unique shape, you might be wondering how to use this type of makeup brush to apply foundation, blush or eyeshadow. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about oval makeup brushes.

The Benefits of Using an Oval Brush

Oval brushes feature soft, tightly packed fibers that are designed to help keep product on the top of the brush instead of getting pushed into it. This results in a more controlled application and an evenly distributed finish. The handles are ergonomic and weight-balanced so the brush is optimized for self-application versus makeup artist application. Overall, the brushes make it easy to blend and waste less product.

Artis, the OG oval brush brand, is known for its luxe, metal-plated brushes that start at $37. For a budget-friendly option, try the Real Techniques Blend + Blur Foundation Brush ($19.99).

How to Use an Oval Brush

Figuring out which size oval brush to use may seem tricky, but it’s actually pretty simple. Generally, large oval brushes are used to apply and blend foundation, powder, bronzer, blush, moisturizers, serums and sunscreen, while small oval brushes are used to apply and blend concealer, contour, powder, blush, highlighter, eyeshadow and eye cream. Just match up the brush with the size of the area you want to apply product to.

Once you have your chosen brush at the ready, start by picking up a very small amount of product (the compact bristles hold onto a lot of product) if you’re applying a powder-based product. If you’re using a liquid or cream, apply the formula directly onto your skin.

Next, glide the brush back and forth in circular motions with light pressure until you’ve achieved your desired effect.
