Makeup Artist Rowi Singh Shares the Key to Her Constantly Creative Instagram Account

#WomanCrushWednesday celebrates our favorite influencers and cool girls who work in the beauty space.

Following creative makeup artists is our guilty pleasure when it comes to Instagram, whether it be a cool illusionist account or a trippy eye makeup feed. One of these addicting accounts is Rowi Singh of @rowisingh, an Australian-based makeup artist and influencer who stuns with her colorful, out-of-the-box makeup looks. Ahead, we chatted with Singh about where she pulls inspiration from, her holy-grail makeup product and how she makes her own makeup rules.

How did you get started with your makeup Instagram account?

For me, it was less about makeup and more about what you can do with it. Makeup is merely the vehicle for my self-expression. I had ideas and opinions that I wanted to share, and Instagram allowed me to create my own rules, putting out content that truly felt unique and authentic to me. Not to mention, it was a really easy and cost-free method to do so. I started posting self-styled looks, infused with culture and a modern aesthetic that seemed to resonate strongly with so many around the world. I eventually gained a following as my creativity levelled up and I refined my skills.

We love your creativity. What inspires you to create your looks?

Anything and everything inspires me! Lately, I've been delving into “look series,” where I create content centred around an idea or theme. This allows me to use my looks as visual communication — it’s like a whole concept in which people can connect with visually and emotionally. Some examples include my Fruit Series and Disney Princesses Reimagined series.

Take us through the process of creating a new look — where do you start?

A lot of the time it's trial and error. I have a diary that I call my “book of looks,” that has every idea written down. If I'm creating something more substantial, sometimes I'll do research to back the concept. But it's best to just create and not plan too much! That way the concept is a lot less structured and more pure.

I've got the basics (foundation, blush, highlighter) but it's also full of colorful liners and neon pigments.

What's your holy-grail makeup product for an out-of-the-box look and why?

I love the P.Louise White and Colourful Bases because it makes your shadows really pop! Laying down a good base before you blend is super important.

And finally, what does makeup mean to you?

Makeup is a form of self-expression! It's freedom to create what you want.
