We may be biased, but springtime is one of the best seasons — mostly because it’s a great excuse to spring clean your collection and buy new makeup(!!!). Just as you rotate your wardrobe with the seasons, you should do the same with your makeup — especially your foundation. While a more hydrating, full-coverage formula works in winter, spring is an entirely different ball game. To help you switch things up with a new formula, we turned to New York City-based makeup artist Ashley Rebecca for her tips on what you should look for in a warmer-weather foundation.

Go Lighter

“Changing your moisturizer and foundation in the spring is a great way to refresh your makeup routine and deliver some lighter, dewier coverage to your face that will lend an overall glow and natural finish,” says Rebecca. Because the weather is warmer, you can go lighter in texture, but make sure you’re layering on the SPF beforehand. We like the new NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Luminous Tinted Skin Serum. This foundation alternative evens out your skin tone while giving you a dewy glow that feels anything but heavy.

Mix It Up

If, however, you absolutely love the winter foundation you've been using, there are still ways to make it more wearable for the warmer months ahead. Keep it in rotation is by mixing in a serum or light moisturizer to give it more of a tinted-moisturizer look and effect. “Mixing a liquid illuminator in will also give you a nice glow and, depending on the tone, some warmth,” adds Rebecca.

Choose the Right Formula for Your Skin

Regardless of the season, you should look for a foundation that works for your skin type. Some other foundation recs we love for the spring months? The L’Oréal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear in a Powder Foundation and the Urban Decay Stay Naked Foundation.
