The Best New Mascara for Long, Straight Lashes

No mascara is created equal. Some formulas are designed to increase volume and length while others nourish and lift. As someone with extremely long, straight lashes I typically gravitate towards mascaras that will hold a curl — but I also love dramatic-looking lashes.

That being said, any time a new mascara launches I must try it. Countless new formulas have already hit shelves this year, but there are four that really caught my attention: L’Oréal Paris Noir Balm Mascara, Maybelline New York Colossal Curl Bounce Mascara, YSL Beauty Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara and Urban Decay Wild Lash Mascara.

All of them have very promising qualities, but which mascara performs best on long, straight lashes? Keep reading to see the results, learn about the qualities of each and find out which one is made for straight lashes.

As I mentioned above, I love dramatic lashes and that’s exactly what this mascara gives me. The formula provides buildable volume that intensifies with each coat without clumping, and the more coats I apply, the more it lifts my lashes. Every time I wear it someone asks if I have fake eyelashes on — which is the best compliment IMO. While some people may label this as a ‘special occasion mascara’ this is the perfect every day pick for those who like to draw all the attention to their eyes.

I had high expectations for this mascara because it’s specially designed for straight lashes — and it doesn’t disappoint. The unique, curved brush scoops and separates each lash to lift them to new heights while the supercharged formula helps lock in the shape so lashes look curled for hours. Some of my lashes grow downwards, so it’s been difficult to find a formula that will keep them curled through an entire day (usually they start to droop halfway through) but they stayed perky and flake-free after multiple 12-hour days. With this pick I’m ditching my eyelash curler for good.

The main difference between this mascara and the others in this list is how cushiony the formula feels. It’s infused with glycerin and fatty acids, which gives it a rich, creamy texture and allows it to gently glide onto each lash. Instead of looking crunchy (like if I touched them they would crumble) my eyelashes look soft and silky throughout the day. While it doesn’t give me a major lifting effect, it is a nice change on days when I want a more natural look.

Out of the bunch, I was least impressed with this one. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great mascara, but it didn’t give me the amount of lift or volume I was after. Rather than mega volume, my lashes look wispy and natural when I wear it — making it perfect for no-makeup makeup looks. I also appreciate that the formula is clean and contains nourishing ingredients like coconut and avocado oils to condition lashes and help them grow strong.

Each of these mascaras have their own unique benefits, but if you’re looking to take your straight lashes to the next level I recommend either YSL Beauty Lash Clash or Maybelline New York Curl Bounce. These two quickly became staples in my mascara collection because they both provide long-lasting lift and volume and are buildable, so you can create your own customized effect. If you have long, straight lashes (or short, straight lashes!) you definitely need these mascaras in your makeup bag.
