Cutting your hair is no feat for the beauty weak — and even though you may have a good idea of how short you want your chop, it’s easy to get lost when it comes to deciding what type of style you’re going for. Ahead, we asked hair guru Zachary Morad to bread down some of his favorite go-to styles that will make your haircut decision a lot easier and your cut even more seamless.

Layers and Layers

Oftentimes, women with long hair will request long layers. While this is always a safe choice, it’s actually not the most long-lasting option. Adding some shorter layers throughout the top of your hair will not only add bounce and volume, but it will also help you maintain some style and shape, no matter how long you go in-between cuts. Removing the weight from the top layers of you hair will prevent it from falling flat, which is the first sign that it’s time for a trim.

One Length

Maybe your hair is very fine and layers make it feel too thin, or maybe your hair is too thick and layers are giving you a bit too much volume. That’s what might make you a perfect contender for a blunt, one length chop. Nowadays, we are seeing many women rocking single-length hair in so many different ways. Whether it’s a short, solid bob or seamless long locks with a strong face-framing angle, this look has more versatility than you think. To maintain one-length hair, make sure it remains strong and healthy to maximize the time in-between cuts, Morad always recommends a nourishing leave-in conditioner (like Redken Extreme Anti-Snap/Distressed Hair Treatment) to help prevent your ends from drying out or breaking.

Bangs

Bangs may seem like they require a lot of attention, but, in reality, they allow for a fresh, interesting look, even if your hair is tied up in a ponytail. As a soft, wispy fringe, grows out, it can be worn to the side as a side-swept bang. Adding this to a layered haircut will allow you to grow your hair into a few different styles before returning to the chair.

Asymmetry

If you’re looking to do something really different but still chic with your hair, an asymmetrical cut is the way to go. Not only can this frame your face in an entirely new way if you have short hair, it’s pretty to easy to maintain and requires little finesse (just a few comb throughs with a brush!). We recommend a crisp, asymmetric cut on straight, long hair if you’re looking for a more subtle finish.
