Is it just us, or do braids keep getting more and more complicated?
While they can be polished and whimsical, or utterly romantic (hello, wedding updos), tbh, we typically resort to braids when we just didn’t feel like shampooing, or woke up to some serious bedhead—and not the cute kind.
For the days you’ve got, say, three minutes or less to look presentable, pull up this fishtail video and plait away! It may be messy, but we promise this hairstyle is totally SFW.
Step 1. Spray hair from root to ends with dry shampoo or texturizing spray. We used Shu Uemura Color Lustre Dry Cleaner. #ProTip: Spraying all over the hair before braiding gives a matte, non-slip texture to the hair, making braids easier to style and gives a gentle hold. This is especially useful if you have fine hair or just shampooed!
Step 2. Pull all hair to the side and tie with a clear elastic band.
Step 3. Fishtail braid all the way through.
How to Fishtail Braid:
Separate hair into two equal sections.
Taking a half-inch section of hair from the outside of the left ponytail, pull this piece across the top of the left ponytail over to the right ponytail.
Follow our step-by-step fishtail braid tutorial for this part!
Step 4. Secure your fishtail braid at the bottom and cut the clear elastic band used in Step 2 to hold your ponytail. Tug and pull your fishtail braid along the edges for a wispier, looser plait.
Messy looks good on you!
What’d you say? Are you going to give this messy braid a shot?
