Whether you want to accentuate your cheekbones or add a healthy pop of color to tie your beauty look together, blush is a staple for almost every beauty enthusiast. But, if you’re new to rouge, try and choose a shade and texture that works for your skin. Blushes come in a variety of finishes ranging from cream to powder and can help you achieve a no-makeup-makeup look or a full-face beat. Cream and liquid formulas are easy to blend and offer a skin-like finish while powder blushes are typically more pigmented. Ahead, check out our tips to apply and blend your blush for foolproof application.

BLUSH TIP 1: (If It’s Powder-y) Use a Fluffy Brush

It’s important to choose your tools wisely when applying blush. Round, fluffy brushes are ideal for evenly blending out a pigmented powder. Try brushes like YSL Powder Brush and Urban Decay Pro Optical Blurring Brush. If you’re using a creamier product, your fingers are a secret blending weapon.

BLUSH TIP 2: Tap That Brush!

Remember that a little goes a long way with highly pigmented products. The last thing you want is a large pink spot on your face, so we typically subscribe to a less-is-more mentality. Start small and build up the color. Dip your brush into the blush compact and tap off any excess before application. Use light, sweeping motions across the cheek for sun-kissed skin. But if you mistakenly go a little heavy handed, remember the power of blending. Work the blush outwards until you get a diffused finish.

BLUSH TIP 4: Placement Is Key!

Keep blush on the apples of the cheeks and blend upward. This will give you a natural finish versus one that looks streaky or harsh. Pop some warm bronzing powder in the hollows of your cheekbones for contour.

BLUSH TIP 5: Add Highlighter

If you want a matte finish, then you can pack up your brushes until next time. But, if you’re aiming for a glowy look, grab some highlighter to accentuate a healthy glow. We love NYX Away We Glow Liquid Highlighter. Dab the liquid with your fingers on the high points of your face for added dewiness.
