Our Beauty Editors Share Their Go-To Winter Lip ColorsFebruary 22, 2019
A bold winter lipstick can do so much more than just coat your lips around this time of year — a little swipe can instantly add a little personality, confidence and spark to any makeup look. Ahead, we asked four of our beauty editors here at Makeup.com what inspiring lip color they’ve been reaching for as of late, and here are the top contenders.
In the words of Marie Kondo, lately I’ve been just trying to wear makeup that ‘sparks joy,’ for me, and the new LOP Signature Matte in I Stand has been getting the job done lately. This lightweight lipstick is the perfect marriage between a liquid lip and a lip stain, — and I love that this color does an excellent job at carrying both types of finish. This is the type of deep brown shade that complements my complexion and brings out my brown eyes, and it’s one that I can simply wear to any cozy winter occasion with pride.
Words cannot even begin to describe my love for matte lipsticks, especially nude ones. I’m always on the hunt for a new shade to add to my ever-growing collection but none compare to my beloved Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Uptight. The warm nude comfort matte is my winter makeup go-to. I love it because it’s super easy to just throw on no matter what I’m wearing (and I’m obsessed with the rich color, obviously). The formula is also surprisingly nourishing compared to most matte lipsticks and does wonders at hiding how dry my lips this time of year.
I’m a red lipstick devotee (seriously, I have an entire drawer dedicated to them), but blustery winter weather almost always makes me gravitate toward darker, moodier hues. Lately, I’ve been slicking on the YSL Volupté Liquid Balm in Hook Me Berry. The deep raspberry shade works for both day and night — I use a single coat for day and build it up for richer pigment at night — and the balm-like consistency ensures my lips feel hydrated and don’t show any cold weather-induced flakiness.
It was a random winter afternoon when I decided to investigate our office lipstick stash to find a new, comfortable formula. My heart belongs with Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink, but now that my lips are starved of hydration, I’m leaning toward lighter, more nourishing formulas as opposed to thick mattes. Not only am I obsessed with the muted deep plum shade of NYX Full Color Lip Oil, but I also love how it glides onto my lips and feels super hydrating — without sacrificing the full-coverage color.
