Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling when you’re getting your nails done (or doing a DIY mani) and after the first stroke of polish, you instantly realize that you’ve made a mistake? That’s what I like to call manicure regret. Either the polish just doesn’t complement your skin tone or looks a bit different in the bottle than it does on your nails and now you’re stuck with it. Thanks to Essie’s new virtual try-on tool, Essie On Hand, you can say goodbye to manicure regret and hello to manicure happiness.

The global team for Essie recently launched the web-based tool that allows you to see how certain shades look against your skin tone and on different nail shapes (like round, square or rounded square). Right now, the full Essie Gel Couture collection — a 75-shade long-wearing range — is available to “try on,” with lots more colors to be made available soon.

You can try the tool out for yourself right on Essie.com via desktop or mobile. There, you can either upload a photo of your hands, turn on your camera or choose a hand model to start virtually swatching. The polishes are categorized by finish (i.e., cream, shimmer, metallic or sheer) and color family, so it makes it easy to try on a range of shades to find your perfect match. If you find one that you like, you can click “buy now” to purchase it or simply save it to your wishlist for later.

Personally, I’ve been looking for a spring neutral that won’t wash out my fair skin. After virtually trying on a number of nudes, I settled on Pinned Up, a creamy rose shade that I never would have thought to choose from the wall of polishes at my local salon. Also in my cart post-swatch? Perfect Posture, a periwinkle powder blue that’s going to be my go-to spring shade.
