How to Achieve the Blowout of Your Dreams

The wintertime is when blowouts thrive, mostly because of the lack of humidity in the air that usually causes frizz. If your DIY blowout doesn’t hold a candle to a salon style, it’s time to brush up on your technique and reassess your products and tools.

For tips, we consulted with Marilisa Sears, artistic director of Marc Anthony Hair Care. Below she shares her pro tips for creating a salon-worthy blowout for both straight and natural hair textures.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Blowout on Curly and Natural Hair

Prep With Products That Replenish Moisture

“Generally speaking, during winter months add a mask to your routine for moisture,” says Sears. “The air around you is much drier these months, so it’s important to continuously add moisture to your hair (and skin).”

We love Kérastase Masque Réhydratant Hair Mask which has ceramides to lock in moisture. Once you rinse off your hair mask, Sears recommends using a leave-in treatment like Marc Anthony Strictly Curls 7-in-1 Leave-In Treatment Foam on wet curls.

The Right Brush Key

“You want the largest natural bristle brush you can get your hand on. You are looking for an old school, big hair blowout that moves,” says Sears.

Try the Bend Technique

Section hair and with a slow but steady pace, use a flat iron from roots to end for a more polished look. “Lift out from the root and bend slightly at the ends,” says Sears. “You only want to do this once for smoothing so there is no damage.”

Tips for Creating the Perfect Blowout on Fine, Straight Hair

Start With a Thickening Agent

“You want to layer thickening products so that you get a maximum full blowout effect with minimal effort,” says Sears. We suggest prepping hair with Garnier Fructis Full & Plush Fortifying Shampoo and Conditioner. While hair is still wet, Sears likes to add a small amount of Marc Anthony Instantly Thick + Biotin Styling Cream from roots to ends.

The Right Brush Key (Yes, Here Too!)

“You want a medium natural bristle brush for this hair texture, lifting from the root (blow dryer facing down so cuticles remain closed) and pinning each section as you go to help set,” says Sears.

Finish With More Volume

Once your hair is dry, a volumizing hairspray will help give shine and a light hold so your blowout is winter-ready. “Lightly spritz all over with Marc Anthony Dream Big Volume Hairspray as the formulation is light and won’t weigh down your hard work,” says Sears.
