How to Switch Up Your Summer Makeup Routine, According to Makeup ArtistsJune 29, 2021
As the summer heat rises, you switch up your wardrobe, why wouldn’t you shake up your makeup routine too? From using more glosses to being extra-vigilant about sunscreen application, summer is the perfect time to embrace glowy, minimalist makeup looks. To help you build your perfect routine, we asked pro makeup artists to share their favorite beauty tips for summer.
Change the Way You Use Your Primer
“My favorite tip for wearing summer makeup is mixing a primer with your foundation,” says Lilit Caradanian, makeup artist and owner of Elcie Cosmetics. “It thins out your foundation for a more fresh wear.” We recommend the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Hydrating Primer, a glowy formula infused with shea butter and glycerin for soft, radiant skin.
Slick on a Shiny Lip Gloss
Matte lips are classic, but glossy lips feel so fresh and light for summer. We love the L'Oréal Infallible Pro Plump Lip Gloss with Hyaluronic Acid for plumping up lip lines and making lips appear shimmery and full.
Skip Foundation Altogether
“Many people still apply a lot of heavy layers of makeup in the summer, which is such a no-no when trying to extend the wear of your makeup,” says Lancôme beauty advisor Olivia Thompson. Instead, swap out your foundation for something more lightweight, such as the NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Tinted Skin Veil, a sheer cream infused with soothing aloe and cucumber extracts.
Change Up Your Makeup Textures
“For summer, I always have my clients switch out the textures of their makeup products and look for long wear,” says Giorgio Armani celebrity makeup artist Tim Quinn. “For the eyes, Giorgio Armani Eye Tints offer crease-proof washes of color.” The Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Sticks are another creamy, longwear bet for the eyes.
Always Wear Sunscreen
It’s essential to wear sunscreen every day, even if it looks cloudy outside. “I normally start with my skincare products and then whenever I’m ready to put on my makeup, I apply my sunscreen,” says content creator Marwah Khamas. “Wait a few minutes before applying your makeup to give your skin enough time to soak in the sunscreen. Then continue with primer and foundation.” The SkinCeuticals Daily Brightening UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 30 is flecked with mica to give your skin a radiant glow while shielding it from UV rays.
