If the major makeup trends of 2023 are any indication, the beauty world has had food on the brain. From strawberry girl makeup to cherry mocha nails, some of the biggest beauty moments of the year sound like they were plucked straight from the menu of a chic cafe. Whether you love or hate the unexpected merger of food and makeup, it’s unavoidable if you spend any time on beauty TikTok and Instagram.

But at Makeup.com, we’re all for embracing these yummy trends. The nostalgic, sensory associations we have with snacks, sweet treats and coffee drinks make it easy to visualize and replicate makeup techniques — regardless of skill level. Keep scrolling for our favorite food-inspired makeup and beauty trends to sweep social media this year.

Food-Inspired Makeup and Beauty Trends

Candy Apple Makeup

Candy apples are a quintessential fall sweet treat — and they just so happen to make great makeup inspo. To try the look, you’ll need to start with a glossy, glowy base for your skin to mimic the reflective shine of a candy apple. Try warming up your cheeks with the L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion. And of course, you can’t forget a bright red lip to tie the look together!

Cherry Cola Lips

Cherry cola lips had a major moment at the beginning of the summer, but we think it’s the perfect lip look for the fall and the holiday season if you are looking for something slightly less expected than a classic red lip. The key to achieving the signature cola color is to start by lining your lips with brown lip liner (we like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Waterproof Lip Liner in 1993) before going in with a red gloss or lipstick.

Latte Makeup

Makeup looks that resemble our coffee orders are also popping up, as evidenced by the virality of latte makeup earlier this fall. Latte makeup is another name for a warm, soft glam makeup look complete with a brown smoky eye. It pulls in shades of a steaming, milky mug of coffee, from more muted nudes to richer browns.

Butter Makeup

If you like to experiment with bright colors and graphic eye makeup, butter makeup may be the food-inspired beauty trend for you. This may be the most surprising source of inspo yet, but it’s all about channeling the warm golden and yellow hues of butter. And after all, who doesn’t like butter? Pro tip: Our favorite yellow eyeshadow is the NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Glow Shots Liquid Eyeshadow in Lemon Slayed.

Strawberry Girl Makeup

Anyone who has spent time on beauty TikTok has likely already heard of strawberry girl makeup. Characterized by rosy, flushed skin and faux freckles, it was one of the biggest makeup trends of the summer. All you need to nail the strawberry girl makeup vibe is a pigmented blush with a dewy finish, like the Urban Decay Hydromaniac Dewy Liquid Blush.

Cherry Mocha Nails

In case you couldn’t already tell, cherry is a huge color trend for 2023 and that applies to nail polish shades, too. To understand the look, imagine a chocolatey mocha beverage with a splash of cherry. It’s similar to black cherry — a moodier, richer take on classic cherry red — and it’s the perfect seasonal shade for fall. DIY the look at home with Essie Berry Naughty.

Tomato Girl Makeup

Tomato girl makeup was everywhere this summer, but we are all for rocking it during the colder months, as well. It’s a great option if you are into a more sheer, light-coverage look for your skin that allows your natural radiance to shine through. The tomato element comes with a wash of red-hued blush and blotted red lips. Opt for a multi-use product like the YSL Nu Lip & Cheek Balmy Tint in Flush to get a monochromatic effect.
